The county town of Essex, Chelmsford can be found on the rivers Can and Chelmer, some 32 miles from the city of London. Chelmsford has got a population of approximately 111,000 occupants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,000.

Chelmsford is an early town that was the location of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The location of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age settlements, the town was later on the location of a Roman fortress in about 60 AD, and the encampment which grew up round the fortification was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon settlement followed after the decline of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was recognized as Celmeresfort, however by the year 1199 it had become known by its contemporary title of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th Cent, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and furthermore became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent some of the occupants of Chelmsford participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, some of the ringleaders were consequently executed in Chelmsford after the rebellion was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th C saw more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and put to death numerous suspected witches.

Over the years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became a considerable manufacturing town during the 19th Cent, producing such products as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its prominence in light industrial engineering resulted in its being a target of bombing in WWII, and it was hit several times.

The train arrived in Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence for the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some approximately forty five yrs earlier (1797), at which time it connected the town with the Blackwater estuary, helping ships to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford entered a period of decline during the 1980's, since a good deal of its manufacturers went bust, even so it still is a successful and booming town today, predominantly because of its close proximity to the city of london, plus the outstanding rail and road communications.

The town sits close to the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it's approximately 26 kilometres drive from Colchester and about fifty-one kilometres from the heart of London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
