Essex's county town, Chelmsford stands on the Can and Chelmer rivers, some 32 miles from the heart of London. The town boasts a population of some 110,000 inhabitants, while the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,300.

Chelmsford is an old town which was the location of a Roman fort in about 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church became a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The location of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, Chelmsford was subsequently the location of a Roman fortification in roughly the 1st century AD, and the commune that expanded round the fort was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . A Saxon community succeeded the demise of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, whilst 100 years later being called by its present title of Chelmsford.

At the time of the thirteenth century, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and furthermore became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th C a number of the people of the town became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a handful of the instigators were subsequently put to death in the town after Richard II ended the insurrection.

The 17th C witnessed more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and hanged countless alleged exponents of witchcraft.

For several generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford turned in to an important industrial town during the 19th century, producing goods such as steam engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products, traction engines and ballbearings. Its significance in light industrial engineering led to its being a target for bombing during WW2, and it was successfully struck many times.

The railway found its way to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence to the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some approximately forty five years before (1797), at which time it joined the town with the Blackwater estuary, enabling watercraft to access the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went through some decline in the 1980's, mainly because a high percentage of its industry closed, even so it still is a flourishing and developing town today, mainly because of its close proximity to the city of london, and the superb rail and road links.

The town sits close to the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it is some 16 miles driving distance from Colchester and about 32 mls from the centre of the capital. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
