Essex's county town, Chelmsford is situated on the Can and Chelmer rivers, some 32 miles from the centre of London. Chelmsford has a population of about 111,000 residents, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,000.

Chelmsford is an age-old town which was the location of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford History: The location of early Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, Chelmsford was later on the location of a Roman fortification in roughly 60 AD, and the community which evolved around the fortification was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . A Saxon encampment followed the demise of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, though by1189 being called by its modern identity of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th Cent, it took on the title of county town of Essex and moreover became the seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century a number of the occupants of Chelmsford took part in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a few of the leading instigators were subsequently hung in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the insurrection.

The 17th C witnessed even more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and hanged countless alleged exponents of witchcraft.

Across the years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed in to an important industrial town during the 19th C, making such products as traction engines, ballbearings, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its import in light industry led to its being a target for bombing in WWII, and it was struck many times.

The train came to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence to the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did around 45 years before (1797), at which time it linked Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, helping ships to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town got into some decline in the nineteen-eighties, since much of its manufacturing facilities shut down, yet it continues to be a flourishing and expanding town today, principally due to the close proximity to the city of london, and the quality rail and road links.

Chelmsford lies adjacent to the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it is some 26 kilometers from Colchester and about thirty-two miles from the centre of the capital. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
