The county town of Essex, Chelmsford sits on the Chelmer and Can rivers, a car journey of some thirty two mls from the city of London. Chelmsford boasts a populace of some 111,500 residents, while the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,000.

Chelmsford is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fortress in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was named a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The History of Chelmsford: The location of long past Neolithic and Bronze Age communities, the town was later the site of a Roman fortress in roughly AD 60, and the town that grew up around the fortress was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . A Saxon community superseded the end of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, nonetheless by the year 1199 it had taken on its current title of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th Cent, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex plus became seat of the local assize. During the 14th century a number of the people of the town became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), several of the leading culprits were consequently executed in Chelmsford after the uprising was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th C witnessed many more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and executed numerous supposed exponents of witchcraft.

Through the centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed in to a considerable industrial town in the 19th Cent, crafting items such as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its significance in light industry caused it to be a bombing target during WWII, and it was struck on several occasions.

The railway arrived in the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence to the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some 45 years earlier (1797), when it linked the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, enabling watercraft to access the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went through some decline in the nineteen-eighties, mainly because a good deal of its industrial facilities closed down, though it is still a thriving and developing town today, principally because of its close proximity to the capital, plus its exceptional road and rail connections.
