A Saxon encampment came after the demise of Roman control in Britain, and in the 1086 Domesday Book it was described as Celmeresfort, whilst by the year 1199 being called by its present-day name of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th C, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and additionally became the seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century many of the occupants of the town took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a number of the instigators were subsequently executed in the town after the insurrection was ended by Richard the Second.

The seventeenth century saw many more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and executed countless suspected exponents of witchcraft.

For many generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became an important manufacturing town during the 19th Cent, producing items such as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its significance in light industrial engineering led to its being a bombing target during WW2, and it was hit many times.

The train found its way to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence to the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some about 45 yrs earlier (1797), when it linked the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, allowing vessels to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford moved into substantial decline in the 1980's, simply because much of its industry ceased to be profitable, though it still is a flourishing and blooming town today, mainly because of its proximity to London, and the outstanding road and rail communications.
