River Chelmer - - 411097The Historical Past of Chelmsford: The location of long gone Bronze Age and Neolithic encampments, Chelmsford was later the site of a Roman fort in about the 1st century AD, and the settlement which grew up round the fortress was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. A Saxon encampment followed the downfall of Roman control in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, however 100 years later it had taken on its modern identity of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th Cent, it became the county town of Essex plus became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th century some of the people of the town took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a few of the ringleaders were ultimately put to death in the town after Richard the Second ended the uprising.

The seventeenth century witnessed many more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and executed many assumed exponents of witchcraft.

For several years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved in to a major industrial town in the nineteenth century, manufacturing items such as steam engines, traction engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products and ballbearings. Its prominence in light industrial engineering led to its being a bombing target in the Second World War, and it was hit on a few occasions.

The railway came to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity for the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some forty five yrs before (1797), when it interconnected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, encouraging craft to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town entered considerable decline during the nineteen-eighties, mainly because much of its factories closed, though it remains a thriving and growing town today, mostly due to the nearness to London, plus the first class rail and road communications.

Chelmsford is positioned just off the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it's approximately 16 mls car journey from Colchester and about fifty-one km from the heart of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
