The county town of Essex, Chelmsford lies upon the rivers Can and Chelmer, about 32 miles from the centre of London. Chelmsford boasts a populace of around one hundred and eleven thousand people, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,300.

It is an ancient town which was the location of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin became a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historic Past of Chelmsford: The location of long gone Bronze Age and Neolithic encampments, Chelmsford was later on the site of a Roman fortification in roughly 60 AD, and the town that grew up round the fortress was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon encampment came after the decline of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was registered as Celmeresfort, even though by1189 it was being referred to by its modern title of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th C, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and moreover became the seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century a number of the residents of Chelmsford became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a few of the leading culprits were thereafter executed in the town after Richard II ended the revolt.

The 17th C saw yet more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and put to death numerous suspected witches.

For many years a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford evolved into a significant industrial town in the 19th Cent, crafting goods such as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its significance in light industrial engineering resulted in its being a target of bombing during WWII, and it was hit on a number of occasions.

The railway came to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity for the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some 45 years earlier (1797), at which time it linked the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, allowing boats to access the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went through considerable decline in the nineteen-eighties, when a good deal of its industry shut down, though it is still a thriving and growing town today, mainly because of its nearness to London, plus the exceptional road and rail links.

Chelmsford is positioned just off the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it is around sixteen mls driving distance from Colchester and about fifty-one kilometres from central London.
