The county town of Essex, Chelmsford stands upon the Chelmer and Can rivers, a driving distance of about 32 miles from the city of London. The town has a population of roughly 111,000 occupants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,300.

Chelmsford is an ancient town which was the location of a Roman fort in about 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin got the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The site of early Neolithic and Bronze Age settlements, the town was subsequently the location of a Roman fort in about AD 60, and the town that developed in the locality of the fortress was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon settlement superseded the downfall of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, even though by the year 1199 it had taken on its contemporary title of Chelmsford.

In the 13th century, it became the county town of Essex and in addition became seat of the local assize. During the 14th century many of the citizens of Chelmsford were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a handful of the ringleaders were consequently executed in Chelmsford after the rebellion was ended by Richard II.

The 17th C saw more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and hanged countless alleged witches.

Through the years a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford became an important industrial town during the 19th Cent, making such products as traction engines, ballbearings, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its importance in light industrial engineering resulted in its being a bombing target in the Second World War, and it was successfully hit a few times.

The train found its way to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence for the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done approximately 45 yrs earlier (1797), when it linked the town with the Blackwater estuary, encouraging ships to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town went into a period of decline in the 1980's, because a high percentage of its plants went bust, though it is still a flourishing and developing town today, for the most part because of its closeness to London, and the terrific rail and road connections.

The town is located adjacent to the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it's some 26 kilometres car journey from Colchester and about fifty-one kms from the centre of London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
