Essex's county town, Chelmsford is situated upon the rivers Can and Chelmer, some thirty two miles from the heart of London. Chelmsford has a populace of around 111,000 occupants, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,000.

It is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin became a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

A Saxon camp came after the downfall of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, nonetheless by the year 1199 it had taken on its modern title of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th century, it became the county town of Essex and additionally became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th century some of the citizens of the town became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a handful of the leading agitators were later hung in the town after Richard the Second ended the insurrection.

The seventeenth century saw many more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and hanged countless assumed exponents of witchcraft.

Over the centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved in to a vital industrial town in the 19th century, producing goods such as steam engines, electrical engineering products, wirelesses, traction engines and ballbearings.
