Essex's county town, Chelmsford is found upon the Can and Chelmer rivers, a car journey of roughly thirty two miles from central London. The town has a population of about 110,000 occupants, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,000.

It is an old town which was the location of a Roman fort in around 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin got the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford History: The location of long past Bronze Age and Neolithic communities, the town was subsequently the site of a Roman fortification in about the 1st century AD, and the encampment which evolved in the vicinity of the fortress was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon camp succeeded the decline of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was listed as Celmeresfort, nonetheless 100 years later it had taken on its modern title of Chelmsford.

At the time of the thirteenth century, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and furthermore became seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century many of the inhabitants of Chelmsford participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a handful of the instigators were thereafter put to death in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the uprising.

The 17th C saw many more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and put to death many suspected exponents of witchcraft.

Across the centuries a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford evolved in to a major manufacturing town in the 19th C, manufacturing such goods as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its prominence in light industrial engineering resulted in its being a bombing target in the Second World War, and it was hit on a number of occasions.

The railway line arrived in the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity for the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some 45 yrs before (1797), when it joined Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, which enabled craft to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town went into some decline in the 1980's, simply because a high percentage of its industry closed, yet it is still a thriving and developing town today, predominantly due to the proximity to London, plus the outstanding road and rail communications.
