The county town of Essex, Chelmsford sits on the Chelmer and Can rivers, some 32 miles from the city of London. The town boasts a population of about one hundred and eleven thousand occupants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,300.

It is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fortress in approximately 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historic Past of Chelmsford: The location of long gone Bronze Age and Neolithic colonies, Chelmsford was later on the site of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD, and the town that developed round the fortress was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon encampment followed the demise of Roman control in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, whilst one hundred years later it had taken on its present-day title of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th C, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and additionally became seat of the local assize. In the 14th C a number of the inhabitants of Chelmsford took part in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a few of the leading instigators were thereafter executed in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the uprising.

The 17th Cent saw more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and executed countless alleged exponents of witchcraft.

For many years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed into an important industrial town during the 19th Cent, crafting items such as ball bearings, agricultural machinery, traction engines, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its significance in light industry resulted in its being a bombing target in World War 2, and it was successfully struck many times.

The train arrived at the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence for the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some about forty five years earlier (1797), when it joined the town with the Blackwater estuary, enabling vessels to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went through a period of decline in the nineteen-eighties, simply because a lot of its manufacturing plants closed, yet it is still a flourishing and expanding town today, mainly due to the proximity to the capital, and the good rail and road links.

Chelmsford is positioned near the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it's approximately twenty six km drive from Colchester and about fifty-one kilometers from the centre of the capital.
