An Anglo Saxon community followed after the downfall of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was noted as Celmeresfort, nonetheless one hundred years later it had become known by its modern name of Chelmsford.

For several centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became a substantial manufacturing town during the 19th Cent, producing items such as steam engines, traction engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products and ballbearings. Its import in light industrial engineering led to its being a target for bombing in WWII, and it was hit on a few occasions.

The train came to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence for the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some forty five yrs before (1797), when it linked the town with the Blackwater estuary, letting ships to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town got into a period of decline during the nineteen-eighties, when a lot of its manufacturing plants closed, even so it continues to be a flourishing and booming town today, predominantly due to the close proximity to the city of london, plus the good road and rail links.
