The county town of Essex, Chelmsford stands upon the rivers Can and Chelmer, a car journey of some 32 mls from the city of London. Chelmsford boasts a population of some one hundred and eleven thousand people, and the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,300.

Chelmsford is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fortress in approximately 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church was changed into a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historic Past of Chelmsford: The location of early Bronze Age and Neolithic communities, Chelmsford was later the location of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD, and the settlement which developed in the locality of the fort was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. A Saxon settlement succeeded the decline of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, whilst 100 years later it was being referred to by its modern title of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th C, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and also became seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century some of the citizens of Chelmsford took part in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a handful of the agitators were consequently hung in the town after Richard the Second ended the uprising.

The 17th century saw yet more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and executed many alleged witches.

Over the years a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford evolved in to an important industrial town during the 19th C, manufacturing such products as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its significance in light industry caused it to be a target for bombing in World War 2, and it was hit on a number of occasions.

The railway line arrived at the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity for the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some forty five years before (1797), at which time it joined the town with the Blackwater estuary, enabling craft to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went through a period of decline during the 1980's, simply because a high percentage of its production facilities shut down, even so it remains a flourishing and expanding town today, primarily because of its closeness to the city of london, plus its superb rail and road connections.

The town is set close to the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it's approximately 26 kilometers drive from Colchester and about 32 mls from central London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
