The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is situated upon the rivers Can and Chelmer, a car journey of some 32 mls from the centre of London. Chelmsford boasts a population of some 110,000 residents, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,000.

It is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church became a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The location of very early Bronze Age and Neolithic settlements, the town was later the location of a Roman fortress in approximately AD 60, and the settlement that grew up around the fortress was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon community followed after the end of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was recorded as Celmeresfort, whilst by the year 1199 it had taken on its contemporary identity of Chelmsford.

During the 13th Cent, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and furthermore became seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent a number of the residents of the town took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), several of the instigators were subsequently hung in the town after the revolt was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th Cent saw more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and hanged numerous presumed witches.

Across the generations a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford developed in to an important manufacturing town in the nineteenth century, producing such items as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its prominence in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a bombing target during WWII, and it was successfully hit several times.

The train came to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence for the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some about forty five years before (1797), when it joined Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, making it possible for ships to access the centre of town from the open sea.

The town got into a period of decline during the 1980's, as much of its manufacturing plants closed, even so it remains a successful and expanding town today, largely due to the proximity to the city of london, plus its excellent road and rail communications.

Chelmsford sits near the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it's around sixteen miles car journey from Colchester and about 32 miles from the heart of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
