The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is positioned upon the Can and Chelmer rivers, about 32 mls from central London. Chelmsford boasts a population of approximately 111,000 people, and the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,300.

It is an age-old town that was the location of a Roman fort in approximately 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin became a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The History of Chelmsford: The site of long gone Neolithic and Bronze Age settlements, the town was later the location of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD, and the encampment that grew up in the vicinity of the fortification was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . A Saxon settlement superseded the decline of Roman control in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was recorded as Celmeresfort, although by1189 it had become known by its current title of Chelmsford.

During the 13th Cent, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and also became seat of the local assize. In the 14th C some of the locals of the town were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a handful of the ringleaders were consequently hung in Chelmsford after the insurrection was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th century saw many more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and put to death many suspected exponents of witchcraft.

For many years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved into a substantial manufacturing town during the 19th Cent, producing products such as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its significance in light industrial engineering caused it to be a target of bombing during World War 2, and it was hit on a few occasions.

The railway found its way to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity for the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did around forty five years before (1797), at which time it joined Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, which allowed vessels to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town got into a time of decline during the nineteen-eighties, because a good deal of its manufacturers closed, however it still is a thriving and developing town today, largely due to the proximity to London, plus the exceptional rail and road communications.

The town stands near the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it is about 16 mls from Colchester and about 51 km from central London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
