River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The site of very early Bronze Age and Neolithic encampments, Chelmsford was subsequently the site of a Roman fortification in about the 1st century AD, and the commune which developed surrounding the fortification was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon settlement succeeded the end of the Romans in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, even though by the year 1199 it had taken on its present-day name of Chelmsford.

As early as the thirteenth century, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and additionally became seat of the local assize. In the 14th C many of the residents of the town were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a number of the instigators were later executed in the town after Richard the Second ended the rebellion.

The seventeenth century saw many more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and executed countless alleged exponents of witchcraft.

For several centuries a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford evolved in to a significant industrial town in the nineteenth century, making products such as steam engines, electrical engineering products, wirelesses, traction engines and ballbearings. Its significance in light industrial engineering resulted in its being a target of bombing during WW2, and it was struck several times.

The train found its way to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity to the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some forty five yrs before (1797), when it linked the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, which enabled watercraft to access the centre of town from the open sea.

The town entered some decline during the nineteen-eighties, when a good deal of its industry shut down, though it still is a successful and booming town today, mainly due to the proximity to the capital, plus its superb rail and road communications.
