The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is found upon the rivers Chelmer and Can, some thirty two mls from the centre of London. Chelmsford has got a populace of some one hundred and eleven thousand residents, and the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,300.

A Saxon camp followed after the demise of Roman control in Britain, and in the 1086 Domesday Book it was recorded as Celmeresfort, though one hundred years later being called by its modern title of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th Cent, it became the county town of Essex plus became seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent many of the locals of Chelmsford participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), some of the agitators were consequently put to death in the town after the revolt was ended by Richard the Second.

The seventeenth century saw many more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and hanged numerous supposed exponents of witchcraft.

Through the generations a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford evolved in to a considerable manufacturing town in the nineteenth century, producing items such as steam engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products, traction engines and ballbearings. Its significance in light industrial engineering resulted in its being a target for bombing during the Second World War, and it was successfully hit a number of times.

The railway line arrived in Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence to the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done about forty five years earlier (1797), at which time it connected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, encouraging boats to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.
