Its import in light industrial manufacturing led to its being a bombing target during WW2, and it was hit on a few occasions.

The train came to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity for the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some 45 yrs earlier (1797), when it joined Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, enabling vessels to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford entered a time of decline in the nineteen-eighties, simply because much of its manufacturing facilities went bust, though it is still a thriving and growing town today, mostly due to its closeness to London, and its good rail and road connections.
