Essex's county town, Chelmsford is found on the rivers Can and Chelmer, some 32 mls from central London. The town has a populace of around 111,000 inhabitants, while the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,300.

It is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin was changed into a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The location of early Bronze Age and Neolithic communities, Chelmsford was later on the location of a Roman fortification in about AD 60, and the community which grew up round the fort was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon settlement followed the end of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was documented as Celmeresfort, whilst 100 years later being called by its current identity of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th C, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and also became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th C many of the locals of the town participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, some of the leading instigators were ultimately executed in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the uprising.

The 17th C saw many more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and put to death numerous alleged exponents of witchcraft.

For several years a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford evolved in to a major manufacturing town during the nineteenth century, producing items such as steam engines, traction engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products and ballbearings. Its prominence in light industry caused it to be a bombing target in World War 2, and it was struck several times.

The railway found its way to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity for the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some forty five years earlier (1797), at which time it interconnected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, making it possible for watercraft to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town went into some decline during the nineteen-eighties, since much of its manufacturing plants closed down, though it remains a successful and growing town today, for the most part because of its close proximity to London, plus the terrific rail and road communications.

The town is set near the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it is about 16 mls from Colchester and about 32 mls from the heart of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
