Essex's county town, Chelmsford is found upon the rivers Can and Chelmer, a car journey of some thirty two mls from the centre of London. The town has a population of approximately 111,500 residents, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,300.

Chelmsford is an age-old town that was the location of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was named a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historical Past of Chelmsford: The site of long gone Neolithic and Bronze Age settlements, the town was later the location of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD, and the town which evolved around the fort was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . An Anglo Saxon camp followed after the end of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, however by1189 it had become known by its modern name of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th Cent, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and also became seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent some of the locals of the town took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a few of the leading instigators were accordingly put to death in Chelmsford after the uprising was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th Cent witnessed many more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and hanged numerous supposed exponents of witchcraft.

Over the years a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford turned in to an important manufacturing town during the 19th Cent, manufacturing such products as traction engines, ballbearings, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its importance in light industry resulted in its being a bombing target in WW2, and it was struck on a number of occasions.

The train came to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity for the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some about 45 years earlier (1797), at which time it joined the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, making it possible for craft to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town moved into a period of decline in the nineteen-eighties, since much of its industry shut down, even so it still is a successful and blooming town today, largely due to its close proximity to London, plus the terrific rail and road communications.

Chelmsford is set just off the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it is around 26 kilometers car journey from Colchester and about 32 mls from the centre of the capital. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
