Essex's county town, Chelmsford is located on the rivers Can and Chelmer, some 32 miles from the heart of London. The town has got a population of roughly 111,500 inhabitants, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,000.

Chelmsford is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church got the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - - 411097The Historical Past of Chelmsford: The site of long gone Neolithic and Bronze Age communities, Chelmsford was later the site of a Roman fort in around 60 AD, and the village that expanded around the fortress was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . A Saxon community followed after the decline of the Romans in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was registered as Celmeresfort, nonetheless by1189 it had taken on its contemporary name of Chelmsford.

In the 13th century, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and in addition became seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent some of the people of the town participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a handful of the main agitators were consequently executed in Chelmsford after the revolt was ended by Richard II.

The 17th C saw more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and executed numerous suspected witches.

Across the years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became a vital manufacturing town during the nineteenth century, producing products such as steam engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products, traction engines and ballbearings. Its significance in light industrial manufacturing resulted in its being a bombing target during WW2, and it was struck quite a few times.
