River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The location of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age communities, the town was later the location of a Roman fortress in roughly the first century AD, and the village that grew up in the vicinity of the fort was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon camp came after the downfall of the Romans in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was listed as Celmeresfort, however 100 years later being called by its modern title of Chelmsford.

As long ago thirteenth century, it became the county town of Essex plus became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th century many of the people of the town became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), several of the main agitators were later hung in the town after the insurrection was ended by Richard the Second.

The seventeenth century witnessed more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and put to death countless alleged witches.

Across the generations a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford developed into a major industrial town during the 19th century, producing such goods as traction engines, ballbearings, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its significance in light industry led to its being a target for bombing in WWII, and it was struck on a few occasions.

The railway line came to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence for the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some forty five years earlier (1797), when it joined Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, making it possible for craft to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went through a period of decline during the nineteen-eighties, as a good deal of its industry closed down, though it remains a successful and booming town today, for the most part due to the nearness to London, and its outstanding road and rail links.

The town is situated close to the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it's around 26 km car journey from Colchester and about thirty-two miles from the heart of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
