River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford History: The site of very early Bronze Age and Neolithic encampments, the town was later the location of a Roman fortification in roughly the 1st century AD, and the village which evolved in the area of the fortification was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon camp superseded the downfall of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was registered as Celmeresfort, even though 100 years later it had taken on its present title of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th Cent, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and furthermore became seat of the local assize. During the 14th century many of the inhabitants of Chelmsford were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a number of the agitators were accordingly put to death in the town after the uprising was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th C saw more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and put to death numerous suspected witches.

Across the generations a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford became a major industrial town in the 19th Cent, producing items such as steam engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products, traction engines and ballbearings. Its prominence in light industrial engineering resulted in its being a target of bombing in the Second World War, and it was struck on several occasions.

The railway came to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence for the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done approximately 45 yrs before (1797), when it interconnected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, allowing ships to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford moved into a period of decline during the nineteen-eighties, simply because a lot of its manufacturers shut down, yet it remains a thriving and expanding town today, for the most part due to its closeness to London, and the excellent rail and road communications.
