Essex's county town, Chelmsford is found upon the Chelmer and Can rivers, some 32 mls from the heart of London. Chelmsford has a populace of some 111,000 inhabitants, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,000.

It is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church got the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - - 411097The History of Chelmsford: The location of long past Bronze Age and Neolithic encampments, the town was later the location of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD, and the commune that evolved in the locality of the fort was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. A Saxon settlement succeeded the decline of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was noted as Celmeresfort, though by1189 being called by its present identity of Chelmsford.

In the thirteenth century, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and furthermore became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent some of the locals of the town took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), some of the ringleaders were thereafter put to death in Chelmsford after the insurrection was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th century witnessed lots more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and executed countless suspected exponents of witchcraft.

For several years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed into a substantial manufacturing town in the nineteenth century, producing items such as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its import in light industrial manufacturing resulted in its being a target for bombing in WW2, and it was struck a few times.

The railway line arrived in the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity to the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some 45 yrs before (1797), at which time it joined Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, allowing watercraft to access the centre of town from the open sea.

The town entered a period of decline in the 1980's, as a lot of its industry closed down, even so it still is a successful and booming town today, for the most part because of its proximity to the capital, plus its terrific road and rail communications.
