For many generations a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford turned into a serious industrial town during the nineteenth century, manufacturing products such as traction engines, ballbearings, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its importance in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a target of bombing in WW2, and it was struck many times.

The train came to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence for the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some roughly forty five yrs earlier (1797), at which time it interconnected the town with the Blackwater estuary, helping craft to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town entered substantial decline in the nineteen-eighties, because much of its industry ceased to be profitable, even so it continues to be a thriving and growing town today, predominantly because of its closeness to the capital, and its good road and rail communications.
