Essex's county town, Chelmsford lies on the Can and Chelmer rivers, approximately 32 miles from the centre of London. Chelmsford boasts a populace of approximately one hundred and eleven thousand people, while the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,300.

Chelmsford is an age-old town that was the location of a Roman fortress in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The location of early Neolithic and Bronze Age communities, Chelmsford was later the location of a Roman fort in about AD 60, and the settlement that developed surrounding the fortress was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . An Anglo Saxon settlement superseded the decline of Roman control in Britain, and in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, nevertheless one hundred years later it had taken on its current name of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th century, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and also became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th century a number of the residents of the town became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, some of the instigators were consequently executed in the town after Richard II ended the revolt.

The 17th C saw lots more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and executed numerous assumed witches.

For many generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved into a major industrial town during the 19th century, crafting such products as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its import in light industrial engineering resulted in its being a bombing target during World War 2, and it was hit many times.

The railway found its way to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence for the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some 45 yrs earlier (1797), at which time it linked the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, making it possible for ships to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town went through a period of decline in the 1980's, when a good deal of its industry went bust, though it is still a thriving and growing town today, primarily due to its closeness to London, plus the excellent road and rail connections.

The town lies near the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it is around 16 miles car journey from Colchester and about thirty-two miles from the centre of London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
