The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is located on the rivers Can and Chelmer, a car journey of about 32 miles from the centre of London. Chelmsford has a population of around one hundred and eleven thousand inhabitants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,000.

It is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin was changed into a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - - 411097The Historic Past of Chelmsford: The site of early Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, the town was later the location of a Roman fort in approximately 60 AD, and the village which grew up round the fort was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon settlement superseded the decline of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was listed as Celmeresfort, nonetheless by the year 1199 being called by its modern title of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th century, it took on the title of county town of Essex and in addition became seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century many of the locals of Chelmsford became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a handful of the agitators were later executed in Chelmsford after the rebellion was ended by Richard the Second.
