Essex's county town, Chelmsford stands upon the Can and Chelmer rivers, some thirty two mls from the heart of London. Chelmsford has got a population of around 111,000 people, and the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,300.

Chelmsford is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church became a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

An Anglo Saxon camp succeeded the demise of the Romans in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, however by the year 1199 being called by its modern name of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th Cent, it took on the title of county town of Essex and moreover became seat of the local assize. In the 14th C a number of the residents of Chelmsford took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), several of the ringleaders were subsequently hung in the town after Richard II ended the uprising.

The 17th century witnessed even more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and executed many assumed exponents of witchcraft.
