Chelmsford is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fort in about 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was named a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The History of Chelmsford: The site of very early Bronze Age and Neolithic encampments, Chelmsford was later the location of a Roman fortress in approximately AD 60, and the community which grew up around the fortress was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon encampment succeeded the end of the Romans in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was noted as Celmeresfort, whilst by the year 1199 being called by its present name of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th century, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and also became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th C many of the inhabitants of the town were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a few of the instigators were subsequently executed in the town after the revolt was ended by Richard II.

The 17th C saw more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and put to death many assumed witches.

For several generations a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford became a substantial industrial town during the 19th century, manufacturing items such as traction engines, ballbearings, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its significance in light industrial engineering led to its being a bombing target in WW2, and it was hit a number of times.

The railway line arrived in the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence to the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done around 45 years earlier (1797), at which time it interconnected the town with the Blackwater estuary, which made it possible for watercraft to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

The town moved into a time of decline in the 1980's, as much of its manufacturing facilities closed down, though it still is a successful and booming town today, principally because of its closeness to the capital, and its superb rail and road connections.
