It is an ancient town which was the location of a Roman fortress in approximately 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford History: The site of long past Neolithic and Bronze Age communities, the town was later the location of a Roman fort in roughly the first century AD, and the town which evolved round the fort was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . An Anglo Saxon encampment succeeded the decline of Roman control in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, though 100 years later it had become known by its present title of Chelmsford.

As early as the thirteenth century, it became the county town of Essex and also became seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century some of the inhabitants of Chelmsford participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), several of the agitators were later hung in Chelmsford after the rebellion was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th C saw lots more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and put to death many assumed exponents of witchcraft.

Across the years a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford turned in to a major manufacturing town during the 19th C, manufacturing such items as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its significance in light industrial engineering caused it to be a target of bombing during WWII, and it was successfully hit on a number of occasions.

The railway line arrived in Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity to the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some about forty five years before (1797), when it connected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, making it possible for watercraft to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went through a time of decline in the 1980's, because a good deal of its industry closed down, even so it still is a flourishing and booming town today, for the most part due to the close proximity to London, plus the terrific road and rail communications.
