An Anglo Saxon community followed the downfall of Roman control in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, even though 100 years later it had taken on its present name of Chelmsford.

Across the centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved into a significant industrial town during the nineteenth century, crafting such products as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its prominence in light industrial manufacturing resulted in its being a target of bombing during WW2, and it was successfully struck a few times.

The railway line arrived in Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence for the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some 45 yrs earlier (1797), at which time it joined Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, letting boats to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford got into serious decline in the nineteen-eighties, because a good deal of its industry shut down, nonetheless it continues to be a successful and booming town today, principally due to the proximity to the city of london, plus the first rate rail and road links.
