The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is situated upon the Chelmer and Can rivers, a car journey of around 32 mls from the heart of London. The town has got a populace of approximately 111,500 inhabitants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,000.

It is an ancient town that was the location of a Roman fort in about 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin was changed into a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The History of Chelmsford: The location of long gone Bronze Age and Neolithic encampments, the town was later on the site of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD, and the town which developed around the fort was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon camp succeeded the demise of the Romans in Britain, and in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, although by the year 1199 it had taken on its current name of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th C, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex plus became seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century a number of the citizens of the town were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a handful of the ringleaders were accordingly put to death in Chelmsford after the uprising was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th century saw lots more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and hanged countless suspected exponents of witchcraft.

Throughout the generations a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford evolved in to an important industrial town in the 19th Cent, crafting items such as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its importance in light industrial engineering caused it to be a bombing target during WWII, and it was successfully struck on several occasions.

The railway line arrived in Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity for the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some forty five yrs before (1797), when it interconnected the town with the Blackwater estuary, which allowed ships to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town got into a time of decline during the nineteen-eighties, simply because much of its industry ceased to be profitable, even so it remains a thriving and blooming town today, primarily due to its closeness to the capital, and its first class road and rail connections.

The town is found beside the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it is around 26 kilometers driving distance from Colchester and about 32 miles from central London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
