The county town of Essex, Chelmsford sits on the Can and Chelmer rivers, about thirty two mls from central London. Chelmsford has got a populace of about 110,000 residents, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,300.

It is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford History: The location of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, Chelmsford was later the location of a Roman fortification in approximately AD 60, and the settlement that grew up surrounding the fortification was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . A Saxon camp followed after the demise of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, nevertheless by the year 1199 it had taken on its modern name of Chelmsford.

During the thirteenth century, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex plus became seat of the local assize. In the 14th C some of the occupants of the town participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), some of the instigators were subsequently put to death in Chelmsford after the insurrection was ended by Richard II.

The seventeenth century witnessed even more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and put to death many alleged exponents of witchcraft.

Over the centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved into a substantial industrial town during the 19th century, manufacturing products such as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its significance in light industrial engineering caused it to be a bombing target during WWII, and it was hit several times.

The railway arrived in Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence for the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some forty five yrs before (1797), when it interconnected the town with the Blackwater estuary, letting craft to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford entered substantial decline in the 1980's, because a high percentage of its manufacturing facilities shut down, though it is still a flourishing and booming town today, predominantly due to its proximity to the city of london, and its first class road and rail communications.

The town is located adjacent to the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it is around sixteen miles car journey from Colchester and about 32 miles from the centre of London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
