Its prominence in light industrial engineering resulted in its being a target for bombing in WW2, and it was struck a few times.

The railway line arrived at the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence for the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some around forty five years before (1797), when it interconnected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, encouraging ships to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town got into some decline during the 1980's, simply because a lot of its industry closed, even so it continues to be a thriving and expanding town today, mostly due to its proximity to the city of london, plus the outstanding road and rail communications.
