The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is positioned on the Chelmer and Can rivers, about 32 miles from central London. Chelmsford boasts a populace of about 111,500 inhabitants, while the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,300.

It is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fort in approximately 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford History: The site of long past Bronze Age and Neolithic encampments, Chelmsford was later the site of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD, and the community which expanded round the fortification was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon settlement succeeded the end of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was noted as Celmeresfort, though by the year 1199 being called by its contemporary title of Chelmsford.

During the 13th Cent, it took on the title of county town of Essex and furthermore became seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent a number of the locals of Chelmsford were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), several of the agitators were consequently executed in the town after Richard II ended the rebellion.

The 17th Cent witnessed more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and executed numerous presumed witches.

For many centuries a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford became an important manufacturing town during the 19th century, producing items such as ball bearings, agricultural machinery, traction engines, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its significance in light industrial engineering led to its being a bombing target in WW2, and it was hit on a number of occasions.

The railway arrived at the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence to the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some 45 years before (1797), at which time it joined Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, encouraging craft to access the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went through a time of decline in the nineteen-eighties, as a lot of its factories closed down, even so it continues to be a flourishing and blooming town today, for the most part due to the nearness to London, plus the first rate road and rail communications.
