Essex's county town, Chelmsford lies on the Chelmer and Can rivers, some thirty two mls from the heart of London. The town has a populace of around one hundred and eleven thousand people, and the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,300.

A Saxon community came after the downfall of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was described as Celmeresfort, nevertheless by the year 1199 it had taken on its contemporary name of Chelmsford.

During the 13th C, it became the county town of Essex and moreover became the seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century many of the people of the town participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, some of the leading culprits were consequently executed in the town after the rebellion was ended by Richard the Second.

The seventeenth century saw lots more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and hanged numerous alleged exponents of witchcraft.

Throughout the centuries a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford developed in to a considerable manufacturing town during the 19th C, manufacturing such products as steam engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products, traction engines and ballbearings. Its importance in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a target of bombing in WWII, and it was struck on a number of occasions.

The railway arrived at Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence for the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done roughly forty five yrs before (1797), at which time it joined Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, allowing watercraft to reach the centre of town from the open sea.
