River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The site of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age communities, Chelmsford was later the location of a Roman fortification in around the 1st century AD, and the town which grew up surrounding the fort was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . An Anglo Saxon camp followed the downfall of Roman control in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, although 100 years later it had taken on its current name of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th C, it took on the title of county town of Essex and in addition became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th C some of the inhabitants of Chelmsford became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, some of the ringleaders were later hung in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the rebellion.

The 17th C saw lots more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and hanged countless supposed exponents of witchcraft.

Across the centuries a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford became a substantial industrial town during the 19th century, producing products such as steam engines, traction engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products and ballbearings. Its significance in light industrial engineering resulted in its being a bombing target in the Second World War, and it was struck on a few occasions.

The railway found its way to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity for the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did approximately 45 yrs earlier (1797), at which time it linked Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, letting boats to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford entered considerable decline during the 1980's, as much of its industrial facilities closed down, even so it is still a thriving and blooming town today, principally due to the close proximity to the capital, plus the exceptional rail and road links.
