Essex's county town, Chelmsford stands on the rivers Can and Chelmer, some thirty two mls from the city of London. The town has got a population of roughly 111,000 residents, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

It is an early town which was the location of a Roman fortress in approximately 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

At the time of the thirteenth century, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and additionally became seat of the local assize. In the 14th century many of the residents of the town were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), some of the leading agitators were thereafter executed in the town after the rebellion was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th Cent witnessed yet more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and hanged many alleged exponents of witchcraft.

Through the years a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford evolved into a significant industrial town in the 19th century, manufacturing such products as traction engines, ballbearings, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its prominence in light industry caused it to be a bombing target during the Second World War, and it was successfully hit a number of times.

The train came to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence for the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done about forty five years earlier (1797), at which time it connected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, allowing boats to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.
