Essex's county town, Chelmsford can be found upon the Can and Chelmer rivers, some 32 mls from the heart of London. Chelmsford boasts a population of some one hundred and eleven thousand people, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,300.

Chelmsford is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fortress in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was named a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford History: The site of very early Bronze Age and Neolithic settlements, the town was later the site of a Roman fortress in roughly the first century AD, and the community that evolved in the locality of the fort was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . An Anglo Saxon settlement superseded the downfall of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was registered as Celmeresfort, even though by the year 1199 it had taken on its modern title of Chelmsford.

During the 13th C, it took on the title of county town of Essex and in addition became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent some of the citizens of Chelmsford took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), some of the agitators were subsequently executed in Chelmsford after Richard the Second ended the insurrection.

The 17th century saw lots more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and put to death countless suspected witches.

Over the centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became a serious manufacturing town in the 19th Cent, crafting items such as ball bearings, traction engines, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its prominence in light industrial engineering caused it to be a target of bombing in World War 2, and it was hit a few times.

The train arrived in Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity to the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done approximately forty five years earlier (1797), at which time it joined the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, which enabled watercraft to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford got into substantial decline in the nineteen-eighties, simply because a good deal of its industry closed down, even so it still is a flourishing and booming town today, primarily due to its proximity to the city of london, and the excellent road and rail communications.

The town is situated near the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it's roughly 16 mls from Colchester and about 32 mls from the centre of the capital. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
