Essex's county town, Chelmsford sits upon the rivers Chelmer and Can, some thirty two mls from central London. Chelmsford has a population of some 110,000 inhabitants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,000.

Chelmsford is an old town that was the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin was changed into a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford History: The location of long past Bronze Age and Neolithic settlements, Chelmsford was subsequently the site of a Roman fortress in roughly the first century AD, and the town that grew up surrounding the fortification was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon community superseded the end of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, whilst by the year 1199 it had taken on its current identity of Chelmsford.

In the 13th century, it took on the title of county town of Essex and furthermore became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent a number of the locals of Chelmsford were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a handful of the main agitators were accordingly hung in Chelmsford after Richard the Second ended the insurrection.

The seventeenth century witnessed many more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and hanged countless assumed exponents of witchcraft.

Throughout the generations a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford turned into a substantial manufacturing town in the 19th century, manufacturing goods such as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its import in light industrial manufacturing led to its being a bombing target during WWII, and it was successfully hit quite a few times.

The train came to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence for the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some roughly forty five years earlier (1797), at which time it joined the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, enabling ships to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went through serious decline in the 1980's, since a lot of its manufacturing plants ceased to be profitable, though it continues to be a flourishing and developing town today, mostly due to the closeness to the city of london, and its excellent road and rail links.

Chelmsford lies close to the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it's some twenty six kilometers car journey from Colchester and about 51 km from the centre of the capital. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
