Essex's county town, Chelmsford is positioned on the rivers Chelmer and Can, some thirty two mls from the city of London. The town has a populace of some 111,000 occupants, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

It is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was changed into a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The site of very early Bronze Age and Neolithic settlements, the town was later the site of a Roman fortification in roughly the first century AD, and the village that grew up surrounding the fortress was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. A Saxon settlement followed the downfall of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was listed as Celmeresfort, even though 100 years later it had become known by its current identity of Chelmsford.

In the thirteenth century, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and also became the seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century some of the inhabitants of the town were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), some of the leading agitators were later put to death in Chelmsford after Richard the Second ended the uprising.

The 17th century saw more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and executed many suspected exponents of witchcraft.

Over the generations a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford became an important manufacturing town during the nineteenth century, producing goods such as traction engines, ballbearings, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its import in light industry led to its being a target of bombing during World War 2, and it was hit a few times.

The railway came to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity for the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some around 45 yrs before (1797), at which time it linked the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, which made it possible for boats to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford entered some decline during the nineteen-eighties, as a high percentage of its factories went bust, though it is still a flourishing and blooming town today, primarily due to its proximity to the city of london, and the outstanding road and rail communications.

The town is found beside the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it's roughly sixteen miles from Colchester and about thirty-two miles from the centre of the capital. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
