River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The location of early Bronze Age and Neolithic communities, Chelmsford was subsequently the location of a Roman fortification in around the 1st century AD, and the town which grew up surrounding the fort was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon community came after the decline of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was noted as Celmeresfort, nevertheless by the year 1199 it was being referred to by its modern title of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th C, it took on the title of county town of Essex and moreover became seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century a number of the inhabitants of Chelmsford were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), several of the leading agitators were subsequently put to death in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the insurrection.

The 17th century saw yet more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and executed countless suspected witches.

Across the generations a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford evolved into a considerable industrial town in the 19th century, making goods such as steam engines, traction engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products and ballbearings. Its importance in light industry led to its being a bombing target in WWII, and it was successfully hit on several occasions.

The railway line arrived at the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence for the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done around 45 yrs before (1797), at which time it joined Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, allowing boats to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town got into substantial decline in the nineteen-eighties, when a good deal of its industry shut down, although it still is a successful and growing town today, mainly due to the close proximity to London, plus its first class road and rail communications.
