Essex's county town, Chelmsford is located on the rivers Chelmer and Can, around 32 mls from central London. Chelmsford has got a population of some 110,000 people, while the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,300.

It is an ancient town that was the location of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church was named a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The History of Chelmsford: The location of early Neolithic and Bronze Age settlements, Chelmsford was later on the site of a Roman fort in around AD 60, and the village which expanded surrounding the fortification was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon encampment succeeded the end of Roman control in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, although by the year 1199 being called by its contemporary identity of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th century, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and moreover became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent some of the locals of Chelmsford became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a few of the main agitators were ultimately executed in Chelmsford after the rebellion was ended by Richard II.

The 17th century saw lots more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and put to death countless supposed witches.

Throughout the generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed into a considerable industrial town in the 19th C, producing products such as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its significance in light industrial manufacturing resulted in its being a target of bombing during WWII, and it was successfully struck many times.

The railway came to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence to the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some forty five yrs earlier (1797), when it linked the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, encouraging ships to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went into some decline in the 1980's, because much of its manufacturing facilities went bust, even so it remains a successful and developing town today, largely due to the nearness to the city of london, and the outstanding rail and road links.

Chelmsford is set just off the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it's roughly twenty six km drive from Colchester and about thirty-two miles from central London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
