Essex's county town, Chelmsford lies upon the Chelmer and Can rivers, some thirty two mls from the city of London. Chelmsford has a populace of roughly 111,000 residents, and the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,000.

It is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fort in about 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford History: The site of very early Bronze Age and Neolithic settlements, the town was subsequently the site of a Roman fort in approximately AD 60, and the village which expanded around the fort was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon settlement followed the demise of Roman control in Britain, and in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, whilst one hundred years later being called by its contemporary title of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th Cent, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and furthermore became the seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century many of the locals of the town took part in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, several of the instigators were ultimately executed in Chelmsford after Richard the Second ended the revolt.

The 17th century saw more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and executed many alleged exponents of witchcraft.

For several centuries a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford turned in to a considerable industrial town during the nineteenth century, crafting products such as steam engines, electrical engineering products, wirelesses, traction engines and ballbearings. Its significance in light industry caused it to be a bombing target in the Second World War, and it was hit many times.

The railway found its way to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity for the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did about forty five years before (1797), when it interconnected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, making it possible for boats to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford got into substantial decline in the nineteen-eighties, as a good deal of its industry closed, though it remains a flourishing and developing town today, mainly due to its nearness to the city of london, plus the first rate road and rail communications.

The town is located just off the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it is approximately 26 kilometers drive from Colchester and about thirty-two mls from the centre of London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
