Essex's county town, Chelmsford stands on the Chelmer and Can rivers, some thirty two mls from the city of London. The town has a populace of some 110,000 people, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,300.

Chelmsford is an old town which was the location of a Roman fortress in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin was named a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The site of early Bronze Age and Neolithic colonies, the town was subsequently the location of a Roman fortification in around the first century AD, and the village that expanded in the area of the fort was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . A Saxon settlement came after the end of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was noted as Celmeresfort, however by1189 it had become known by its modern name of Chelmsford.

As early as the thirteenth century, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and also became seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century a number of the residents of the town participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a number of the instigators were subsequently executed in the town after the revolt was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th century saw lots more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and hanged many assumed exponents of witchcraft.

Through the centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed into a major manufacturing town in the nineteenth century, crafting such items as steam engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products, traction engines and ballbearings. Its import in light industry resulted in its being a bombing target during WWII, and it was struck a number of times.

The railway line arrived at Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence to the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some 45 yrs earlier (1797), when it linked the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, helping vessels to access the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went through substantial decline during the nineteen-eighties, because much of its manufacturing plants shut down, though it remains a flourishing and booming town today, predominantly because of its proximity to the city of london, and its excellent road and rail connections.

Chelmsford is set near the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it's roughly twenty six km car journey from Colchester and about 32 mls from the heart of London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
