Its prominence in light industrial engineering resulted in its being a target of bombing during the Second World War, and it was successfully struck on a number of occasions.

The railway line came to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity for the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did around 45 years earlier (1797), at which time it joined the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, encouraging boats to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town went through a time of decline in the nineteen-eighties, because a good deal of its plants ceased to be profitable, all the same it is still a successful and blooming town today, mainly due to the nearness to the capital, and its good road and rail communications.
