Its importance in light industrial engineering led to its being a bombing target in World War 2, and it was hit on a few occasions.

The train arrived at Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity to the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some 45 years earlier (1797), at which time it connected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, letting ships to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford got into a time of decline in the nineteen-eighties, because much of its industry ceased to be profitable, nevertheless it still is a successful and expanding town today, principally due to the close proximity to the capital, plus the superb rail and road connections.
