Essex's county town, Chelmsford can be found upon the rivers Can and Chelmer, approximately thirty two mls from the centre of London. The town boasts a population of around 111,000 occupants, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,000.

Chelmsford is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford History: The location of early Bronze Age and Neolithic encampments, the town was later the site of a Roman fort in around 60 AD, and the encampment that expanded around the fortification was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . A Saxon community followed after the demise of Roman control in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, though by the year 1199 it had taken on its current name of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th Cent, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and moreover became seat of the local assize. In the 14th C some of the citizens of Chelmsford were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), several of the main instigators were subsequently executed in the town after the uprising was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th Cent saw lots more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and hanged countless assumed exponents of witchcraft.

Throughout the centuries a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford developed in to a substantial manufacturing town in the 19th C, producing such products as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its importance in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a bombing target during World War 2, and it was hit a few times.

The train arrived at the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity for the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some forty five yrs before (1797), when it joined the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, encouraging watercraft to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went through significant decline in the nineteen-eighties, simply because a lot of its industry closed down, even so it continues to be a successful and growing town today, mainly due to its nearness to the city of london, and the excellent rail and road links.

Chelmsford is set just off the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it is approximately sixteen mls drive from Colchester and about 32 miles from central London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
