Essex's county town, Chelmsford is set upon the Can and Chelmer rivers, a driving distance of around 32 miles from the city of London. The town has a population of roughly 111,500 occupants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,300.

It is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fortress in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin became a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The site of very early Bronze Age and Neolithic colonies, the town was later on the site of a Roman fort in about the 1st century AD, and the community that grew up surrounding the fort was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon settlement superseded the demise of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, nonetheless 100 years later it was being referred to by its current title of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th Cent, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and also became seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century some of the residents of Chelmsford became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a number of the leading culprits were subsequently put to death in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the insurrection.

The 17th century saw many more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and put to death many suspected exponents of witchcraft.

Through the centuries a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford developed into a major industrial town during the 19th Cent, producing goods such as ball bearings, traction engines, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its significance in light industrial engineering resulted in its being a target of bombing in World War 2, and it was successfully hit on a number of occasions.

The train came to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity for the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some approximately 45 years before (1797), when it connected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, making it possible for watercraft to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went through a time of decline in the nineteen-eighties, because much of its manufacturing facilities went bust, although it is still a thriving and expanding town today, largely due to the nearness to London, plus the excellent rail and road links.

The town is situated adjacent to the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it is around 16 miles car journey from Colchester and about 51 kilometers from central London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
