Essex's county town, Chelmsford lies on the rivers Can and Chelmer, a driving distance of about thirty two miles from central London. Chelmsford has a population of around one hundred and eleven thousand occupants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,300.

It is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fort in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The History of Chelmsford: The location of very early Bronze Age and Neolithic encampments, the town was later the location of a Roman fortification in about the 1st century AD, and the town which grew up surrounding the fortress was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . An Anglo Saxon encampment came after the end of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, although by1189 being called by its current identity of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th century, it took on the title of county town of Essex and additionally became seat of the local assize. During the 14th C some of the citizens of Chelmsford were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), several of the agitators were ultimately put to death in the town after the uprising was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th C saw even more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and put to death numerous suspected witches.

For several centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became a substantial manufacturing town in the nineteenth century, producing such items as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its prominence in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a bombing target during WWII, and it was struck on a few occasions.

The train came to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity for the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some 45 years earlier (1797), at which time it linked Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, making it possible for ships to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went into significant decline during the 1980's, because a good deal of its industry shut down, nevertheless it still is a flourishing and developing town today, predominantly due to the closeness to London, and its quality rail and road communications.
