Essex's county town, Chelmsford stands on the Chelmer and Can rivers, about thirty two mls from the centre of London. The town has got a population of about 110,000 residents, and the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,300.

Chelmsford is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fort in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church was named a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford History: The location of early Bronze Age and Neolithic settlements, the town was later on the site of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD, and the commune that expanded surrounding the fortification was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . A Saxon community superseded the end of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was registered as Celmeresfort, nevertheless one hundred years later it had taken on its contemporary title of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th C, it became the county town of Essex and additionally became seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century a number of the inhabitants of Chelmsford took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a number of the leading instigators were ultimately put to death in the town after the uprising was ended by Richard the Second.

The seventeenth century saw more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and put to death numerous presumed exponents of witchcraft.

Throughout the generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed into a major manufacturing town in the 19th century, producing goods such as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its importance in light industrial engineering caused it to be a bombing target in the Second World War, and it was successfully hit on a few occasions.

The railway came to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence to the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some about forty five years before (1797), at which time it linked the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, making it possible for craft to access the centre of town from the open sea.

The town entered a time of decline during the nineteen-eighties, because a high percentage of its plants ceased to be profitable, even so it is still a successful and blooming town today, mainly because of its close proximity to the city of london, and the outstanding road and rail connections.

The town is set just off the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it's approximately 16 miles driving distance from Colchester and about 32 mls from the centre of the capital. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
