Essex's county town, Chelmsford sits on the rivers Can and Chelmer, some thirty two mls from central London. The town has got a population of roughly 111,500 inhabitants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,300.

Chelmsford is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin was named a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The site of early Bronze Age and Neolithic communities, the town was later on the location of a Roman fortress in roughly AD 60, and the town that grew up round the fortress was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . An Anglo Saxon camp followed after the downfall of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, even though by1189 it had taken on its present-day title of Chelmsford.

In the 13th C, it took on the title of county town of Essex and also became seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century a number of the inhabitants of Chelmsford took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a handful of the main culprits were later put to death in the town after Richard the Second ended the rebellion.

The seventeenth century witnessed even more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and executed countless suspected exponents of witchcraft.

Across the centuries a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford turned into a considerable manufacturing town in the 19th century, producing such products as steam engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products, traction engines and ballbearings. Its prominence in light industry led to its being a target for bombing in WWII, and it was hit quite a few times.

The train arrived at the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence to the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some about forty five years before (1797), when it connected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, allowing vessels to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town went into serious decline during the 1980's, as much of its production facilities closed down, though it remains a successful and developing town today, predominantly because of its nearness to the capital, and its good rail and road communications.

Chelmsford stands just off the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it's roughly twenty six kilometers driving distance from Colchester and about 32 miles from the centre of the capital.
