Essex's county town, Chelmsford lies upon the rivers Chelmer and Can, some 32 mls from central London. The town has got a population of around 111,000 inhabitants, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

Chelmsford is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - - 411097The History of Chelmsford: The site of long gone Bronze Age and Neolithic colonies, the town was later the location of a Roman fortress in around AD 60, and the community that developed round the fortification was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. A Saxon camp followed the demise of Roman control in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, whilst one hundred years later it had taken on its present name of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th C, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex plus became seat of the local assize. During the 14th C a number of the residents of the town participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, some of the leading agitators were later hung in the town after Richard II ended the insurrection.

The seventeenth century witnessed lots more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and put to death countless assumed witches.

For several generations a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford turned in to a substantial industrial town during the 19th century, producing such products as steam engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products, traction engines and ballbearings. Its significance in light industrial manufacturing led to its being a bombing target during WWII, and it was hit on a few occasions.

The railway line came to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence for the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some 45 years before (1797), when it linked the town with the Blackwater estuary, which made it possible for ships to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town got into some decline in the 1980's, because much of its industry went bust, though it continues to be a flourishing and expanding town today, primarily due to its closeness to the capital, plus its first rate road and rail links.

The town lies adjacent to the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it's approximately sixteen mls driving distance from Colchester and about thirty-two miles from central London.
