Essex's county town, Chelmsford stands on the rivers Can and Chelmer, approximately 32 miles from the city of London. Chelmsford boasts a population of about 111,000 inhabitants, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,300.

It is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fortress in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church got the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - - 411097The History of Chelmsford: The location of early Neolithic and Bronze Age communities, Chelmsford was subsequently the site of a Roman fortification in about the 1st century AD, and the encampment which grew up in the vicinity of the fort was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . A Saxon camp came after the decline of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was recorded as Celmeresfort, although by the year 1199 being called by its modern name of Chelmsford.

In the 13th C, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and in addition became the seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century many of the inhabitants of Chelmsford were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a few of the leading culprits were subsequently put to death in Chelmsford after Richard the Second ended the rebellion.

The 17th century saw even more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and hanged countless presumed exponents of witchcraft.

For many years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved into an important industrial town in the nineteenth century, manufacturing items such as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its importance in light industrial engineering resulted in its being a target for bombing during World War 2, and it was successfully struck on a number of occasions.

The railway line found its way to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity to the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some roughly forty five years earlier (1797), at which time it interconnected the town with the Blackwater estuary, making it possible for vessels to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town got into a time of decline during the 1980's, simply because much of its manufacturing plants closed down, even so it is still a flourishing and blooming town today, predominantly due to its close proximity to the city of london, and the good road and rail connections.

Chelmsford is set adjacent to the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it is approximately 26 kilometers car journey from Colchester and about fifty-one km from the heart of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
