Essex's county town, Chelmsford is found upon the Can and Chelmer rivers, around thirty two miles from the city of London. Chelmsford has got a populace of about one hundred and eleven thousand inhabitants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,000.

The railway arrived at Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence to the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some 45 years earlier (1797), at which time it linked the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, allowing vessels to access the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went through substantial decline during the 1980's, since a lot of its factories shut down, although it is still a successful and expanding town today, primarily due to the close proximity to the city of london, plus its superb road and rail communications.
