The county town of Essex, Chelmsford can be found upon the Can and Chelmer rivers, about thirty two miles from the heart of London. The town has a population of some 111,000 occupants, while the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,300.

It is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fort in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The site of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, the town was subsequently the site of a Roman fort in approximately AD 60, and the town which grew up surrounding the fort was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . An Anglo Saxon camp succeeded the end of Roman control in Britain, and in the 1086 Domesday Book it was recorded as Celmeresfort, nonetheless one hundred years later it had taken on its current identity of Chelmsford.

In the thirteenth century, it became the county town of Essex and in addition became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th C some of the inhabitants of the town were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a number of the leading agitators were accordingly executed in the town after Richard the Second ended the rebellion.

The 17th century witnessed even more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and put to death numerous assumed exponents of witchcraft.

For many centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed into a major industrial town during the nineteenth century, crafting items such as steam engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products, traction engines and ballbearings. Its significance in light industrial engineering resulted in its being a bombing target in WWII, and it was successfully struck a few times.

The railway found its way to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence for the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some forty five yrs earlier (1797), when it connected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, allowing boats to access the centre of town from the open sea.

The town got into a period of decline during the 1980's, because much of its industrial facilities ceased to be profitable, even so it still is a flourishing and expanding town today, largely because of its close proximity to the capital, and the quality road and rail connections.

The town stands close to the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it is approximately twenty six kilometres drive from Colchester and about 51 kms from the centre of London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
