The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is set upon the Chelmer and Can rivers, a car journey of roughly thirty two mls from the centre of London. Chelmsford has got a population of some 111,500 people, while the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,300.

Chelmsford is an early town which was the location of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin got the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford History: The location of long gone Neolithic and Bronze Age settlements, the town was subsequently the location of a Roman fort in roughly the first century AD, and the town that grew up round the fortification was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon camp followed the end of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, however 100 years later it was being referred to by its present identity of Chelmsford.

During the 13th century, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and moreover became seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent a number of the residents of the town became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), some of the leading instigators were later executed in the town after the rebellion was ended by Richard the Second.

The seventeenth century saw even more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and put to death many alleged witches.

For many years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became a major industrial town in the 19th century, manufacturing items such as steam engines, traction engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products and ballbearings. Its importance in light industrial engineering caused it to be a target for bombing during WWII, and it was successfully struck a number of times.

The train found its way to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity for the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some 45 years earlier (1797), at which time it interconnected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, enabling ships to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went into some decline during the nineteen-eighties, simply because a good deal of its industry closed, even so it still is a successful and growing town today, principally due to its close proximity to the city of london, plus the superb road and rail links.

Chelmsford sits close to the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it is roughly sixteen mls from Colchester and about 32 mls from the centre of the capital. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
