Essex's county town, Chelmsford is positioned on the Can and Chelmer rivers, some thirty two miles from the city of London. The town has a population of roughly 111,500 residents, and the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,300.

It is an early town which was the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The location of long gone Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, Chelmsford was later on the site of a Roman fort in about AD 60, and the settlement that grew up round the fortress was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. A Saxon community followed the end of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, nevertheless by1189 it was being referred to by its present-day name of Chelmsford.

In the thirteenth century, it took on the title of county town of Essex and moreover became seat of the local assize. In the 14th century many of the locals of Chelmsford were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a handful of the instigators were thereafter executed in Chelmsford after the rebellion was ended by Richard II.

The seventeenth century witnessed yet more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and hanged countless alleged exponents of witchcraft.

Over the years a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford turned into a considerable industrial town during the 19th Cent, producing goods such as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its import in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a bombing target in World War 2, and it was successfully hit on several occasions.

The train came to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence for the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done approximately forty five years before (1797), when it linked the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, enabling ships to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went through some decline in the nineteen-eighties, when much of its industries went bust, but it is still a thriving and booming town today, largely due to its nearness to London, and its first rate road and rail communications.

Chelmsford sits near the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it's around twenty six kilometres drive from Colchester and about thirty-two miles from the centre of London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
