It is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fortress in approximately 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was changed into a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historic Past of Chelmsford: The site of early Bronze Age and Neolithic communities, the town was subsequently the site of a Roman fort in approximately the first century AD, and the settlement that grew up around the fort was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon encampment followed the decline of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, although by1189 it had taken on its present-day name of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th Cent, it became the county town of Essex plus became seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent some of the inhabitants of the town became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a handful of the ringleaders were later hung in the town after the insurrection was ended by Richard II.

The 17th Cent witnessed more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and hanged numerous suspected exponents of witchcraft.

For several generations a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford became a significant manufacturing town during the 19th C, making such goods as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its import in light industrial engineering led to its being a bombing target in WW2, and it was successfully struck several times.

The railway line arrived in the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity to the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some forty five yrs earlier (1797), at which time it joined Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, which made it possible for watercraft to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went through some decline in the 1980's, when a high percentage of its industry went bust, in spite of this it still is a thriving and expanding town today, largely due to its proximity to the capital, plus the first rate rail and road links.
