Essex's county town, Chelmsford is situated on the Can and Chelmer rivers, some thirty two miles from central London. The town boasts a population of some 110,000 inhabitants, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,000.

Chelmsford is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fort in about 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin became a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The site of long past Neolithic and Bronze Age settlements, the town was later the site of a Roman fortress in roughly AD 60, and the settlement which developed round the fort was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . A Saxon settlement came after the downfall of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was recorded as Celmeresfort, however by1189 it had become known by its modern identity of Chelmsford.

During the 13th C, it became the county town of Essex and additionally became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent a number of the people of Chelmsford became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a number of the agitators were consequently put to death in Chelmsford after Richard the Second ended the insurrection.

The seventeenth century saw more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and hanged numerous suspected witches.

For several generations a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford turned in to a major industrial town during the 19th C, making such goods as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its prominence in light industrial manufacturing led to its being a target of bombing during the Second World War, and it was successfully hit on a number of occasions.

The railway came to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence to the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some forty five years before (1797), at which time it linked the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, encouraging craft to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

The town entered serious decline during the nineteen-eighties, as a good deal of its industries closed down, even so it still is a successful and booming town today, for the most part due to the close proximity to the capital, and its outstanding road and rail connections.

The town is positioned near the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it is around 16 mls car journey from Colchester and about fifty-one kms from the heart of London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
