The county town of Essex, Chelmsford can be found upon the rivers Can and Chelmer, a car journey of some 32 miles from the heart of London. The town has got a population of some 111,000 occupants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,300.

It is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fort in about 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church became a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historic Past of Chelmsford: The site of early Neolithic and Bronze Age settlements, the town was later the location of a Roman fortress in approximately AD 60, and the community which grew up in the vicinity of the fortification was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon settlement followed after the decline of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, although by1189 it had taken on its contemporary title of Chelmsford.

In the 13th Cent, it became the county town of Essex and also became seat of the local assize. During the 14th century a number of the occupants of the town took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a few of the leading instigators were subsequently executed in Chelmsford after the revolt was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th C saw lots more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and put to death numerous supposed witches.

Over the centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford turned into an important industrial town during the 19th Cent, manufacturing items such as ball bearings, traction engines, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its significance in light industrial engineering led to its being a bombing target in World War 2, and it was successfully hit on several occasions.

The railway came to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence to the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some about 45 yrs earlier (1797), at which time it interconnected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, helping watercraft to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

The town entered a time of decline in the nineteen-eighties, because a good deal of its industrial facilities ceased to be profitable, though it continues to be a thriving and expanding town today, principally due to the close proximity to the capital, and the excellent rail and road links.

Chelmsford lies near the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it's about twenty six kilometers driving distance from Colchester and about 32 miles from the centre of the capital. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
