River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The site of early Bronze Age and Neolithic encampments, Chelmsford was later on the site of a Roman fortress in about 60 AD, and the town which expanded around the fortress was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . A Saxon encampment succeeded the decline of Roman control in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was registered as Celmeresfort, nevertheless one hundred years later it was being referred to by its present identity of Chelmsford.

During the 13th Cent, it took on the title of county town of Essex and furthermore became seat of the local assize. During the 14th century a number of the citizens of the town took part in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, some of the agitators were thereafter hung in the town after the revolt was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th century saw even more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and executed many suspected exponents of witchcraft.

Throughout the generations a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford developed in to a major manufacturing town during the 19th C, producing products such as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its prominence in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a target for bombing in the Second World War, and it was struck on several occasions.

The railway line arrived in Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence to the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did approximately forty five yrs before (1797), when it joined the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, allowing watercraft to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford moved into some decline in the 1980's, mainly because much of its manufacturers went bust, even so it still is a successful and developing town today, mostly due to its closeness to London, and its exceptional road and rail links.
