The county town of Essex, Chelmsford sits upon the Chelmer and Can rivers, some thirty two miles from the centre of London. Chelmsford has got a population of some 111,000 residents, while the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,300.

It is an early town that was the location of a Roman fortress in approximately 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin became a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The location of long gone Bronze Age and Neolithic communities, the town was later the site of a Roman fort in about AD 60, and the commune which grew up around the fort was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . A Saxon settlement followed after the demise of the Romans in Britain, and in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, although 100 years later it had become known by its present-day name of Chelmsford.

In the 13th Cent, it took on the title of county town of Essex and additionally became the seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century many of the locals of Chelmsford were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a number of the main agitators were later hung in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the uprising.

The 17th C witnessed many more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and executed countless presumed witches.
