River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historic Past of Chelmsford: The site of long past Neolithic and Bronze Age settlements, Chelmsford was later on the site of a Roman fortification in about the 1st century AD, and the village which evolved around the fortress was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon encampment followed the end of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was noted as Celmeresfort, even though by1189 being called by its modern identity of Chelmsford.

In the thirteenth century, it became the county town of Essex and furthermore became seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent a number of the inhabitants of Chelmsford became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, several of the main culprits were thereafter executed in the town after the insurrection was ended by Richard the Second.

The seventeenth century saw many more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and executed many alleged witches.

For many generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became a substantial industrial town during the 19th C, manufacturing items such as traction engines, ballbearings, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its import in light industrial engineering caused it to be a target for bombing during the Second World War, and it was hit on a number of occasions.

The railway arrived in the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity for the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done about forty five years earlier (1797), at which time it joined Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, letting watercraft to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town got into substantial decline in the nineteen-eighties, since a good deal of its manufacturing facilities ceased to be profitable, even so it remains a successful and booming town today, mainly due to the nearness to the city of london, plus its superb road and rail connections.
