Essex's county town, Chelmsford lies on the Chelmer and Can rivers, some thirty two mls from the heart of London. The town boasts a population of some 111,000 inhabitants, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,300.

Chelmsford is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fort in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was changed into a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The location of long gone Bronze Age and Neolithic colonies, Chelmsford was subsequently the site of a Roman fortification in about the first century AD, and the settlement which grew up surrounding the fort was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . A Saxon encampment superseded the demise of Roman control in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was registered as Celmeresfort, although 100 years later being called by its modern identity of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th Cent, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and in addition became the seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century a number of the inhabitants of Chelmsford participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, some of the leading culprits were consequently hung in Chelmsford after the uprising was ended by Richard II.

The 17th century witnessed yet more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and hanged many assumed exponents of witchcraft.

For many generations a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford became a substantial manufacturing town in the 19th Cent, producing such goods as steam engines, electrical engineering products, wirelesses, traction engines and ballbearings. Its prominence in light industry led to its being a bombing target during World War 2, and it was hit a few times.

The train came to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence for the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some 45 yrs before (1797), when it linked Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, which enabled vessels to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford got into a time of decline in the nineteen-eighties, because a high percentage of its manufacturers closed, even so it remains a flourishing and expanding town today, largely because of its proximity to the city of london, plus the good rail and road communications.

Chelmsford is set just off the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it is approximately twenty six kilometres from Colchester and about thirty-two mls from the centre of the capital. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
