Essex's county town, Chelmsford stands on the rivers Chelmer and Can, some 32 mls from the city of London. Chelmsford boasts a population of around one hundred and eleven thousand occupants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,300.

Chelmsford is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fortress in about 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin got the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The site of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age settlements, the town was later the location of a Roman fortress in roughly AD 60, and the encampment that evolved surrounding the fort was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . A Saxon community followed the demise of Roman control in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was recorded as Celmeresfort, whilst one hundred years later it was being referred to by its modern title of Chelmsford.

As long ago thirteenth century, it became the county town of Essex and moreover became the seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century many of the residents of the town participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), several of the main culprits were ultimately put to death in Chelmsford after the insurrection was ended by Richard II.

The 17th Cent saw more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and put to death numerous suspected exponents of witchcraft.

Across the years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became a major industrial town during the 19th Cent, crafting such goods as traction engines, ballbearings, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its import in light industry led to its being a target of bombing in WWII, and it was hit many times.

The train found its way to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence for the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done approximately forty five yrs earlier (1797), when it linked Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, allowing vessels to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town entered a period of decline in the nineteen-eighties, since a good deal of its industry shut down, even so it is still a thriving and expanding town today, mostly due to its proximity to the capital, and its superb road and rail connections.

Chelmsford sits close to the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it is about twenty six km driving distance from Colchester and about thirty-two mls from the centre of the capital.
