A Saxon community superseded the downfall of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was recorded as Celmeresfort, though 100 years later it had become known by its contemporary identity of Chelmsford.

In the thirteenth century, it became the county town of Essex and moreover became seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent many of the occupants of Chelmsford took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a few of the agitators were consequently put to death in the town after Richard II ended the rebellion.

For several generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved into an important manufacturing town during the 19th C, manufacturing goods such as steam engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products, traction engines and ballbearings. Its prominence in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a bombing target in WW2, and it was successfully hit on several occasions.

The railway line arrived in Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity for the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some forty five yrs before (1797), at which time it joined Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, letting ships to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford got into a time of decline during the 1980's, simply because a lot of its industry closed down, even so it still is a successful and developing town today, mostly due to the nearness to the capital, plus the first rate rail and road communications.
