A Saxon encampment superseded the downfall of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was documented as Celmeresfort, however by the year 1199 it had taken on its contemporary title of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th Cent, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex plus became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th C many of the inhabitants of the town participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a number of the main culprits were ultimately hung in the town after Richard II ended the insurrection.

The seventeenth century witnessed more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and executed countless suspected witches.

For several years a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford evolved into a substantial industrial town in the 19th C, producing products such as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its prominence in light industrial manufacturing led to its being a target of bombing in WWII, and it was successfully struck many times.

The railway line arrived in Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence to the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done roughly forty five yrs earlier (1797), when it interconnected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, helping craft to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

The town entered some decline during the 1980's, since a good deal of its production facilities closed, even so it remains a successful and booming town today, primarily because of its nearness to the city of london, and the superb road and rail connections.
