The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is set upon the Chelmer and Can rivers, a driving distance of roughly thirty two miles from the city of London. Chelmsford boasts a populace of some 111,500 inhabitants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,300.

Chelmsford is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

An Anglo Saxon encampment followed the decline of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was listed as Celmeresfort, although by the year 1199 it had taken on its contemporary name of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th century, it took on the title of county town of Essex plus became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent some of the locals of the town became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), several of the instigators were thereafter executed in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the revolt.

The 17th Cent witnessed lots more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and executed many presumed exponents of witchcraft.

For several years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford turned into a substantial industrial town in the 19th C, producing goods such as ball bearings, traction engines, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its importance in light industrial manufacturing resulted in its being a bombing target in WW2, and it was hit quite a few times.
