The county town of Essex, Chelmsford stands on the Chelmer and Can rivers, some thirty two miles from the heart of London. The town boasts a populace of roughly one hundred and eleven thousand residents, while the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,000.

It is an ancient town that was the location of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historic Past of Chelmsford: The location of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age encampments, Chelmsford was subsequently the site of a Roman fort in around AD 60, and the encampment which grew up surrounding the fortification was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon community followed after the end of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, whilst 100 years later it had become known by its present-day identity of Chelmsford.

During the 13th C, it took on the title of county town of Essex and moreover became seat of the local assize. During the 14th century some of the occupants of the town became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a number of the leading culprits were accordingly executed in the town after the uprising was ended by Richard II.

The 17th century witnessed more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and put to death countless alleged exponents of witchcraft.

For many centuries a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford developed in to an important industrial town in the nineteenth century, crafting such products as steam engines, electrical engineering products, wirelesses, traction engines and ballbearings. Its importance in light industrial manufacturing resulted in its being a bombing target during World War 2, and it was successfully hit on a few occasions.

The railway arrived at Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity to the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some 45 yrs earlier (1797), when it connected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, encouraging boats to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

The town moved into some decline in the 1980's, since a lot of its manufacturing facilities went bust, though it remains a flourishing and expanding town today, principally due to its proximity to London, and its terrific rail and road links.
