Essex's county town, Chelmsford is found upon the Can and Chelmer rivers, some 32 miles from the centre of London. Chelmsford has a population of approximately 111,500 occupants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,300.

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford History: The site of very early Bronze Age and Neolithic encampments, Chelmsford was later the site of a Roman fortification in around the first century AD, and the community that grew up around the fortification was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon camp followed the downfall of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, nonetheless one hundred years later it had become known by its modern identity of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th C, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex plus became seat of the local assize. In the 14th C some of the occupants of the town were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a handful of the agitators were subsequently executed in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the insurrection.

The seventeenth century witnessed more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and put to death countless presumed witches.

For many generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford turned into a vital industrial town during the nineteenth century, crafting items such as ball bearings, traction engines, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its import in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a bombing target in the Second World War, and it was successfully struck on several occasions.

The train arrived at the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity for the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did about forty five years earlier (1797), when it connected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, helping ships to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went through a time of decline in the nineteen-eighties, mainly because a lot of its industrial facilities went bust, though it remains a successful and growing town today, primarily due to its proximity to the capital, plus the excellent road and rail communications.
