An Anglo Saxon camp succeeded the decline of Roman control in Britain, and in the 1086 Domesday Book it was recorded as Celmeresfort, nevertheless 100 years later it had become known by its present-day title of Chelmsford.

In the 13th Cent, it took on the title of county town of Essex and furthermore became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th century some of the residents of Chelmsford became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a number of the leading instigators were later put to death in Chelmsford after the rebellion was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th C saw many more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and put to death countless supposed witches.

For many years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved into a major manufacturing town in the 19th century, manufacturing such products as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its importance in light industry resulted in its being a bombing target during the Second World War, and it was struck on a number of occasions.

The railway line arrived at Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence to the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some around forty five years before (1797), when it connected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, enabling craft to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town entered a period of decline during the 1980's, simply because a high percentage of its industry went bust, but it still is a successful and growing town today, primarily due to the nearness to the city of london, and the first class road and rail connections.
