Across the years a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford evolved into a major manufacturing town in the 19th century, producing goods such as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its prominence in light industry led to its being a target for bombing in the Second World War, and it was successfully struck on a number of occasions.

The railway line found its way to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence for the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some approximately 45 yrs earlier (1797), when it connected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, helping vessels to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town entered considerable decline in the nineteen-eighties, simply because much of its production facilities closed down, though it remains a thriving and developing town today, largely because of its close proximity to the capital, plus the outstanding road and rail communications.
