The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is set upon the Chelmer and Can rivers, some 32 mls from the city of London. Chelmsford has got a populace of about one hundred and eleven thousand people, while the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,300.

It is an old town which was the location of a Roman fort in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford History: The site of very early Bronze Age and Neolithic communities, Chelmsford was later the location of a Roman fortress in roughly 60 AD, and the town which grew up around the fortress was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon camp succeeded the demise of the Romans in Britain, and in the 1086 Domesday Book it was recorded as Celmeresfort, nevertheless one hundred years later it had become known by its contemporary name of Chelmsford.

During the 13th C, it became the county town of Essex and furthermore became seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century some of the locals of Chelmsford became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a few of the instigators were consequently executed in the town after Richard II ended the revolt.

The 17th Cent witnessed yet more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and hanged countless alleged exponents of witchcraft.

Over the generations a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford developed into a substantial manufacturing town during the 19th C, crafting such products as steam engines, traction engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products and ballbearings. Its significance in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a target for bombing in WW2, and it was successfully hit on several occasions.

The railway arrived in Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity to the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done roughly forty five years before (1797), at which time it linked Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, making it possible for boats to access the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went into some decline in the nineteen-eighties, since a high percentage of its manufacturers shut down, though it still is a thriving and booming town today, largely because of its proximity to the city of london, plus its good rail and road communications.

The town is set adjacent to the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it is about sixteen miles from Colchester and about fifty-one km from the heart of London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
