The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is found on the Can and Chelmer rivers, some thirty two mls from the city of London. The town has got a populace of around one hundred and eleven thousand residents, and the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,300.

It is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fort in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historic Past of Chelmsford: The site of long gone Neolithic and Bronze Age settlements, Chelmsford was later the location of a Roman fortress in approximately AD 60, and the encampment which expanded round the fortress was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon camp followed the downfall of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was described as Celmeresfort, although 100 years later it had taken on its present title of Chelmsford.

During the thirteenth century, it took on the title of county town of Essex and furthermore became seat of the local assize. In the 14th C a number of the occupants of the town became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, several of the leading instigators were subsequently executed in Chelmsford after the uprising was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th C saw even more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and put to death many alleged witches.

Throughout the centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed in to a substantial manufacturing town during the 19th C, manufacturing items such as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its import in light industrial manufacturing resulted in its being a bombing target during the Second World War, and it was struck quite a few times.

The train came to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity to the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some forty five yrs before (1797), at which time it interconnected the town with the Blackwater estuary, which enabled vessels to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford entered a period of decline in the 1980's, because much of its industry went bust, even so it still is a flourishing and developing town today, mostly because of its proximity to the capital, plus its first rate road and rail communications.

Chelmsford is found beside the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it is some twenty six km car journey from Colchester and about fifty-one kilometers from the centre of London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
