River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The site of long gone Bronze Age and Neolithic settlements, Chelmsford was later on the site of a Roman fortification in around the 1st century AD, and the encampment that grew up around the fortress was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon settlement succeeded the demise of the Romans in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was documented as Celmeresfort, nonetheless by1189 it had become known by its present identity of Chelmsford.

During the 13th C, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and moreover became seat of the local assize. In the 14th century a number of the inhabitants of the town took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), some of the leading instigators were later put to death in the town after Richard the Second ended the insurrection.

The 17th Cent witnessed lots more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and executed numerous supposed witches.

For several generations a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford turned in to a serious industrial town during the nineteenth century, manufacturing such products as steam engines, traction engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products and ballbearings. Its importance in light industry caused it to be a target for bombing in WW2, and it was hit several times.

The railway line found its way to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence for the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done about 45 yrs before (1797), at which time it joined the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, allowing watercraft to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town entered a time of decline in the nineteen-eighties, since a lot of its industrial facilities went bust, even so it continues to be a flourishing and booming town today, mainly due to the close proximity to the capital, plus its terrific rail and road communications.

The town is located close to the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it is approximately 26 kilometers from Colchester and about fifty-one kms from the centre of the capital. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
