An Anglo Saxon encampment followed the downfall of Roman control in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, even though by the year 1199 it had become known by its present name of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th C, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and in addition became the seat of the local assize. Through the generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved into an important manufacturing town in the 19th Cent, producing items such as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its significance in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a bombing target in WW2, and it was hit on a number of occasions.

The railway line arrived in the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity to the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some roughly 45 yrs before (1797), when it joined Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, enabling boats to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford moved into some decline in the nineteen-eighties, when much of its industry ceased to be profitable, though it continues to be a thriving and blooming town today, largely due to its proximity to London, plus its good rail and road communications.
