Essex's county town, Chelmsford is positioned on the rivers Chelmer and Can, some thirty two mls from the heart of London. The town has got a populace of approximately 110,000 people, and the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,300.

Chelmsford is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fortress in about 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin became a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford History: The location of long gone Bronze Age and Neolithic communities, the town was later on the location of a Roman fortress in about AD 60, and the town which grew up around the fortress was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . An Anglo Saxon community succeeded the downfall of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was registered as Celmeresfort, though by the year 1199 it had taken on its present-day name of Chelmsford.

At the time of the thirteenth century, it became the county town of Essex plus became seat of the local assize. During the 14th century many of the citizens of the town took part in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a few of the leading instigators were thereafter executed in the town after Richard II ended the uprising.

The 17th Cent witnessed more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and put to death countless suspected witches.

Throughout the centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became an important industrial town in the 19th Cent, manufacturing products such as steam engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products, traction engines and ballbearings. Its significance in light industry caused it to be a target for bombing in the Second World War, and it was successfully hit on a number of occasions.

The train found its way to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity to the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did approximately forty five yrs before (1797), at which time it interconnected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, which allowed ships to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford got into significant decline in the 1980's, because much of its industry went bust, nevertheless it remains a successful and booming town today, for the most part because of its proximity to the capital, and the superb rail and road communications.

The town is found near the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it's roughly 26 kilometers car journey from Colchester and about 51 km from the centre of the capital. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
