Essex's county town, Chelmsford is found upon the rivers Can and Chelmer, some thirty two miles from the city of London. Chelmsford boasts a populace of about one hundred and eleven thousand residents, and the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,300.

It is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fort in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The location of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age settlements, the town was subsequently the location of a Roman fort in around the 1st century AD, and the commune that expanded surrounding the fort was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon settlement succeeded the end of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was registered as Celmeresfort, although by the year 1199 it had taken on its present-day title of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th C, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and furthermore became seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent many of the residents of the town became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a number of the agitators were accordingly put to death in the town after the uprising was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th century witnessed lots more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and executed countless presumed exponents of witchcraft.

For many years a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford turned into a major industrial town during the 19th Cent, producing such goods as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its prominence in light industry caused it to be a bombing target in WW2, and it was successfully struck a few times.

The train arrived in the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence for the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some forty five years earlier (1797), when it interconnected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, making it possible for watercraft to access the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford moved into significant decline in the nineteen-eighties, because a good deal of its industries closed, even so it is still a successful and developing town today, for the most part because of its nearness to London, and the first class rail and road connections.

The town is situated close to the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it's roughly 16 mls car journey from Colchester and about 32 miles from central London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
