The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is set upon the rivers Chelmer and Can, some 32 miles from central London. The town has a population of about 111,500 residents, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,300.

Chelmsford is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fort in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church was named a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).
