River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The History of Chelmsford: The location of long past Neolithic and Bronze Age encampments, the town was subsequently the site of a Roman fortification in approximately the 1st century AD, and the community which grew up surrounding the fort was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . An Anglo Saxon settlement succeeded the end of the Romans in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, though by the year 1199 it was being referred to by its modern identity of Chelmsford.

As long ago thirteenth century, it became the county town of Essex and also became seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent some of the locals of Chelmsford took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a few of the agitators were later put to death in Chelmsford after Richard the Second ended the rebellion.

The 17th C witnessed lots more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and hanged numerous presumed witches.

For several centuries a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford developed into a significant manufacturing town in the nineteenth century, making products such as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its prominence in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a target for bombing in WW2, and it was struck on a number of occasions.

The railway arrived in Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity for the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some 45 yrs earlier (1797), when it linked the town with the Blackwater estuary, enabling watercraft to access the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford entered substantial decline during the nineteen-eighties, as a lot of its industry closed down, even so it remains a successful and developing town today, predominantly because of its close proximity to the city of london, plus the quality rail and road communications.
