Essex's county town, Chelmsford is located upon the Chelmer and Can rivers, about thirty two miles from central London. Chelmsford has got a population of about 111,000 residents, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,000.

Chelmsford is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fort in around 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin became a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - - 411097The Historical Past of Chelmsford: The site of early Bronze Age and Neolithic settlements, the town was later on the site of a Roman fort in about 60 AD, and the community which expanded in the area of the fortification was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . An Anglo Saxon camp superseded the downfall of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the 1086 Domesday Book it was registered as Celmeresfort, whilst by1189 it had taken on its contemporary name of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th C, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and additionally became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th C some of the residents of Chelmsford were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a handful of the instigators were consequently executed in the town after Richard II ended the rebellion.

The 17th Cent witnessed even more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and executed countless presumed witches.

For several centuries a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford became a substantial industrial town during the 19th century, crafting items such as ball bearings, agricultural machinery, traction engines, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its significance in light industry caused it to be a bombing target in WW2, and it was struck on a few occasions.

The train found its way to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence to the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some 45 yrs before (1797), when it connected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, helping boats to access the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went through a period of decline in the 1980's, simply because much of its industry shut down, all the same it remains a thriving and blooming town today, primarily due to its close proximity to the city of london, plus its terrific road and rail connections.

The town is located close to the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it's about 16 mls driving distance from Colchester and about fifty-one kms from the centre of the capital. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
