River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The History of Chelmsford: The site of long past Bronze Age and Neolithic communities, the town was subsequently the location of a Roman fortress in about AD 60, and the town that grew up around the fort was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . A Saxon camp followed after the demise of Roman control in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was described as Celmeresfort, even though one hundred years later it had taken on its modern identity of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th C, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and in addition became seat of the local assize. During the 14th C many of the citizens of the town became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a few of the ringleaders were accordingly executed in the town after the rebellion was ended by Richard the Second.

The seventeenth century saw more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and executed countless alleged exponents of witchcraft.

Across the years a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford became a major industrial town in the 19th century, manufacturing such items as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its significance in light industrial engineering caused it to be a bombing target in WW2, and it was hit on a few occasions.

The railway found its way to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence to the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done roughly forty five yrs earlier (1797), at which time it interconnected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, which enabled watercraft to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went into a time of decline in the 1980's, simply because a lot of its industries went bust, even so it still is a successful and blooming town today, for the most part because of its proximity to London, plus its good rail and road links.

The town can be found near the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it's roughly twenty six kilometres from Colchester and about 32 miles from central London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
