Essex's county town, Chelmsford is positioned upon the rivers Chelmer and Can, a drive of about 32 mls from the heart of London. Chelmsford has a population of about 110,000 occupants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,300.

Chelmsford is an old town which was the location of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historic Past of Chelmsford: The location of long gone Bronze Age and Neolithic encampments, the town was later on the site of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD, and the settlement that evolved around the fortress was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . An Anglo Saxon community followed after the demise of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, whilst by the year 1199 it had become known by its present name of Chelmsford.

In the 13th century, it became the county town of Essex and moreover became the seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century a number of the people of Chelmsford were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), several of the main culprits were thereafter hung in Chelmsford after Richard the Second ended the rebellion.

The seventeenth century witnessed even more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and executed numerous presumed witches.

Over the years a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford became a major industrial town during the 19th Cent, producing goods such as steam engines, traction engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products and ballbearings. Its significance in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a bombing target in WWII, and it was successfully hit on several occasions.

The train found its way to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity to the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done about 45 yrs earlier (1797), at which time it connected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, encouraging boats to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

The town got into significant decline in the 1980's, because much of its industries shut down, yet it still is a thriving and blooming town today, mostly because of its close proximity to London, plus the exceptional rail and road communications.

Chelmsford stands adjacent to the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it's approximately sixteen miles from Colchester and about 32 mls from the centre of London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
