The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is positioned on the Can and Chelmer rivers, about 32 miles from the heart of London. Chelmsford boasts a populace of roughly one hundred and eleven thousand people, and the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,300.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The site of long gone Bronze Age and Neolithic colonies, the town was later on the location of a Roman fort in approximately AD 60, and the encampment that grew up surrounding the fortification was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon encampment followed after the decline of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was listed as Celmeresfort, whilst one hundred years later being called by its present name of Chelmsford.

During the 13th century, it became the county town of Essex and in addition became the seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century a number of the locals of Chelmsford participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a few of the instigators were thereafter hung in the town after the uprising was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th C witnessed many more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and put to death many assumed witches.

Over the years a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford became a major industrial town in the nineteenth century, crafting products such as steam engines, electrical engineering products, wirelesses, traction engines and ballbearings. Its import in light industrial manufacturing led to its being a target of bombing during WW2, and it was struck a number of times.

The railway line came to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence to the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did approximately forty five years earlier (1797), at which time it interconnected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, which enabled craft to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went into a time of decline during the nineteen-eighties, since a high percentage of its industry shut down, even so it continues to be a thriving and expanding town today, primarily because of its nearness to the capital, plus the superb road and rail communications.

The town is positioned adjacent to the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it's roughly 16 miles from Colchester and about thirty-two miles from central London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
