The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is positioned upon the rivers Can and Chelmer, some thirty two mls from the centre of London. The town has got a population of some one hundred and eleven thousand inhabitants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,300.

Chelmsford is an ancient town that was the location of a Roman fort in about 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin became a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historical Past of Chelmsford: The site of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age communities, the town was later on the location of a Roman fortress in about the first century AD, and the village which grew up around the fortification was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon settlement followed after the decline of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was recorded as Celmeresfort, although by1189 it had become known by its present-day name of Chelmsford.

In the thirteenth century, it became the county town of Essex and furthermore became seat of the local assize. During the 14th C a number of the occupants of the town were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a handful of the ringleaders were thereafter hung in Chelmsford after the uprising was ended by Richard II.

The 17th century saw many more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and executed many suspected witches.

Through the centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford turned in to a major industrial town in the 19th C, producing such goods as steam engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products, traction engines and ballbearings. Its import in light industry caused it to be a bombing target during WW2, and it was struck on a few occasions.

The railway arrived in the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity to the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some roughly 45 yrs earlier (1797), at which time it connected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, which made it possible for ships to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town went into a time of decline during the nineteen-eighties, when a high percentage of its industry shut down, all the same it remains a successful and expanding town today, primarily because of its nearness to the city of london, plus its superb rail and road links.

Chelmsford is situated adjacent to the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it's roughly twenty six kilometers from Colchester and about 51 kilometers from the centre of London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
