The county town of Essex, Chelmsford sits upon the Chelmer and Can rivers, a drive of roughly 32 miles from the city of London. Chelmsford boasts a population of approximately 111,000 inhabitants, while the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,300.

It is an ancient town that was the location of a Roman fort in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historical Past of Chelmsford: The site of early Bronze Age and Neolithic communities, Chelmsford was later the location of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD, and the town that developed in the vicinity of the fortress was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon settlement succeeded the demise of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, whilst one hundred years later it was being referred to by its modern title of Chelmsford.

In the 13th C, it became the county town of Essex and in addition became seat of the local assize. During the 14th century a number of the inhabitants of the town were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a few of the leading instigators were later executed in the town after Richard the Second ended the uprising.

The seventeenth century saw more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and executed numerous presumed exponents of witchcraft.

For many generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved in to a substantial manufacturing town in the 19th century, manufacturing products such as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its import in light industry resulted in its being a bombing target during WW2, and it was struck a number of times.

The railway line arrived in Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence for the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some 45 yrs before (1797), when it connected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, which enabled ships to access the heart of the town from the open sea.
