Across the generations a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford became a major industrial town in the 19th century, making such goods as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its significance in light industrial engineering caused it to be a target for bombing in WWII, and it was successfully hit on a number of occasions.

The railway line found its way to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence for the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some around 45 years before (1797), when it connected the town with the Blackwater estuary, which enabled craft to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford moved into a period of decline in the nineteen-eighties, since a lot of its industry closed, though it continues to be a successful and growing town today, principally due to the proximity to the city of london, and the superb rail and road communications.
