Essex's county town, Chelmsford is situated upon the Chelmer and Can rivers, about 32 mls from the centre of London. Chelmsford has got a populace of roughly 110,000 occupants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,000.

It is an ancient town that was the location of a Roman fort in around 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The History of Chelmsford: The site of long gone Bronze Age and Neolithic communities, the town was later the location of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD, and the encampment that evolved round the fortification was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon encampment followed after the end of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was recognized as Celmeresfort, though 100 years later it was being referred to by its modern title of Chelmsford.

In the 13th Cent, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and furthermore became seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century some of the people of Chelmsford participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a few of the main culprits were later executed in the town after the rebellion was ended by Richard II.

The seventeenth century saw lots more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and executed many supposed exponents of witchcraft.

Throughout the centuries a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford developed into a serious industrial town in the nineteenth century, making goods such as steam engines, traction engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products and ballbearings. Its import in light industrial engineering led to its being a bombing target in World War 2, and it was struck on a number of occasions.

The railway arrived in the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity for the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some 45 yrs before (1797), when it joined the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, allowing ships to access the centre of town from the open sea.

The town entered serious decline in the 1980's, as a lot of its plants went bust, even so it is still a thriving and developing town today, mainly due to its close proximity to London, plus its excellent rail and road communications.

The town lies beside the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it is some 26 kilometres drive from Colchester and about 51 kilometers from the centre of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
