The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is found upon the rivers Can and Chelmer, some 32 miles from the centre of London. Chelmsford boasts a population of roughly one hundred and eleven thousand inhabitants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,300.

Chelmsford is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church was changed into a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - - 411097The Historical Past of Chelmsford: The location of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, the town was later the site of a Roman fort in approximately AD 60, and the encampment that grew up around the fortification was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. A Saxon encampment succeeded the decline of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was noted as Celmeresfort, although one hundred years later it was being referred to by its contemporary title of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th century, it took on the title of county town of Essex and in addition became seat of the local assize. In the 14th C a number of the occupants of the town took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a few of the instigators were subsequently hung in Chelmsford after the uprising was ended by Richard II.

The seventeenth century saw lots more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and hanged numerous supposed witches.

For several centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed in to an important industrial town in the 19th C, manufacturing products such as steam engines, electrical engineering products, wirelesses, traction engines and ballbearings. Its importance in light industry led to its being a bombing target during WW2, and it was hit on several occasions.

The train arrived at Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity for the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some 45 yrs earlier (1797), when it linked the town with the Blackwater estuary, allowing watercraft to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

The town entered some decline in the nineteen-eighties, mainly because a lot of its plants shut down, even so it is still a successful and expanding town today, principally due to its proximity to the capital, and the exceptional rail and road communications.

Chelmsford lies near the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it is some 26 km car journey from Colchester and about fifty-one kms from the centre of the capital. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
