River Chelmer - - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The site of long past Neolithic and Bronze Age settlements, Chelmsford was later on the location of a Roman fortress in roughly AD 60, and the village which expanded surrounding the fortress was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon encampment came after the end of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was described as Celmeresfort, even though by1189 being called by its contemporary name of Chelmsford.

At the time of the thirteenth century, it became the county town of Essex and furthermore became seat of the local assize. During the 14th century many of the people of Chelmsford became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a handful of the leading culprits were ultimately hung in Chelmsford after the rebellion was ended by Richard the Second.

Across the years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became a major manufacturing town during the nineteenth century, making goods such as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its importance in light industrial manufacturing resulted in its being a target of bombing in WW2, and it was hit on a number of occasions.

The train arrived in the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity to the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some forty five years earlier (1797), when it joined Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, allowing ships to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford moved into a time of decline during the nineteen-eighties, as a good deal of its industry closed, though it still is a thriving and blooming town today, for the most part because of its proximity to the city of london, plus the first class rail and road links.
