Essex's county town, Chelmsford sits upon the Can and Chelmer rivers, some thirty two mls from the centre of London. The town has a populace of around one hundred and eleven thousand inhabitants, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,000.

Chelmsford is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The site of long past Bronze Age and Neolithic encampments, Chelmsford was subsequently the location of a Roman fortification in approximately the 1st century AD, and the commune that developed round the fortification was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . An Anglo Saxon settlement came after the downfall of Roman control in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, however 100 years later it was being referred to by its contemporary identity of Chelmsford.

During the thirteenth century, it became the county town of Essex and also became seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century some of the citizens of the town participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a number of the main agitators were thereafter executed in the town after Richard the Second ended the insurrection.

The 17th century saw lots more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and executed many presumed witches.

Across the centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved into a substantial manufacturing town during the 19th C, manufacturing products such as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its significance in light industry resulted in its being a bombing target in WW2, and it was struck several times.

The railway arrived in the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence for the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some roughly 45 years earlier (1797), at which time it joined the town with the Blackwater estuary, allowing watercraft to access the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went through a period of decline during the 1980's, as a good deal of its factories closed, in spite of this it still is a flourishing and expanding town today, principally due to the proximity to the capital, plus its good rail and road links.

The town is located adjacent to the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it is around twenty six kilometres from Colchester and about fifty-one km from the centre of London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
