Essex's county town, Chelmsford lies upon the rivers Chelmer and Can, some thirty two mls from the city of London. Chelmsford has a populace of some one hundred and eleven thousand inhabitants, while the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,300.

It is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin was named a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - - 411097The Historic Past of Chelmsford: The location of early Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, the town was subsequently the location of a Roman fort in about AD 60, and the town that grew up round the fortress was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . An Anglo Saxon encampment succeeded the end of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was described as Celmeresfort, whilst 100 years later it was being referred to by its present title of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th C, it took on the title of county town of Essex and in addition became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent many of the residents of Chelmsford participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a few of the instigators were ultimately hung in the town after the insurrection was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th century saw many more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and hanged many supposed exponents of witchcraft.

For several centuries a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford became a considerable manufacturing town in the 19th century, producing items such as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its prominence in light industry led to its being a target for bombing during WW2, and it was successfully hit on a few occasions.

The railway line arrived in the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity for the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some 45 years earlier (1797), at which time it linked Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, allowing watercraft to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went through a time of decline in the nineteen-eighties, because much of its industry ceased to be profitable, although it continues to be a successful and expanding town today, mainly due to the proximity to the capital, plus its first class rail and road connections.

The town is positioned beside the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it's around twenty six kilometers drive from Colchester and about fifty-one km from the heart of London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
