The county town of Essex, Chelmsford sits upon the rivers Chelmer and Can, some 32 mls from the centre of London. Chelmsford boasts a population of some 111,000 people, and the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,300.

Chelmsford is an early town which was the location of a Roman fort in about 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historic Past of Chelmsford: The location of long past Bronze Age and Neolithic colonies, the town was subsequently the site of a Roman fort in approximately the first century AD, and the encampment which developed round the fort was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon settlement superseded the decline of Roman control in Britain, and in the 1086 Domesday Book it was recognized as Celmeresfort, though by the year 1199 it had taken on its present title of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th C, it took on the title of county town of Essex and in addition became the seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century a number of the occupants of the town participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a handful of the instigators were accordingly executed in Chelmsford after Richard the Second ended the rebellion.

The 17th C witnessed more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and put to death many assumed exponents of witchcraft.

Over the centuries a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford turned in to a substantial industrial town during the 19th century, producing items such as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its importance in light industry led to its being a target for bombing in WWII, and it was successfully struck many times.

The train came to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity for the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done approximately 45 years earlier (1797), when it joined Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, allowing ships to access the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford entered substantial decline in the nineteen-eighties, mainly because a good deal of its manufacturing plants shut down, though it remains a flourishing and growing town today, principally due to its proximity to the capital, plus the excellent road and rail connections.

Chelmsford is positioned just off the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it is some 26 kilometres drive from Colchester and about thirty-two miles from the heart of London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
