The county town of Essex, Chelmsford stands upon the rivers Chelmer and Can, roughly thirty two miles from the city of London. Chelmsford boasts a populace of about 111,000 occupants, while the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,300.

It is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin was named a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

Through the centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became an important manufacturing town in the 19th Cent, producing products such as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its significance in light industrial engineering resulted in its being a bombing target in WWII, and it was successfully struck on a few occasions.

The railway arrived at the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence to the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some 45 yrs earlier (1797), at which time it joined the town with the Blackwater estuary, which allowed craft to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town got into considerable decline during the nineteen-eighties, because much of its industrial facilities closed, although it is still a thriving and growing town today, primarily because of its close proximity to London, and its terrific rail and road links.
