The county town of Essex, Chelmsford lies on the Chelmer and Can rivers, some thirty two miles from the heart of London. The town boasts a population of about one hundred and eleven thousand people, while the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,300.

It is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).
