Essex's county town, Chelmsford is situated upon the Chelmer and Can rivers, some 32 miles from the city of London. The town has got a population of roughly one hundred and eleven thousand occupants, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

It is an early town which was the location of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

A Saxon settlement followed the demise of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the 1086 Domesday Book it was recorded as Celmeresfort, even though by the year 1199 it was being referred to by its current name of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th century, it became the county town of Essex plus became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th C a number of the occupants of the town were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a handful of the instigators were later put to death in Chelmsford after Richard the Second ended the revolt.

The 17th C witnessed yet more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and hanged countless presumed exponents of witchcraft.

Across the generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed in to a significant industrial town in the 19th C, manufacturing items such as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its importance in light industrial engineering resulted in its being a target for bombing during WW2, and it was successfully struck several times.

The railway arrived in the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity for the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some approximately forty five years earlier (1797), when it connected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, helping craft to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford moved into considerable decline during the 1980's, when a high percentage of its industry closed down, even so it is still a flourishing and growing town today, principally due to its closeness to the capital, plus its exceptional road and rail communications.
