Essex's county town, Chelmsford is located on the Can and Chelmer rivers, roughly thirty two mls from the city of London. Chelmsford boasts a population of roughly 111,000 residents, and the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,300.

It is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fort in about 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The site of very early Bronze Age and Neolithic settlements, Chelmsford was later the location of a Roman fortification in about AD 60, and the town that expanded surrounding the fortress was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . An Anglo Saxon community succeeded the end of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, whilst by the year 1199 being called by its current title of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th century, it took on the title of county town of Essex plus became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent a number of the people of Chelmsford participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a number of the agitators were ultimately hung in the town after Richard II ended the insurrection.

The seventeenth century saw yet more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and executed numerous supposed exponents of witchcraft.

For several centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed in to a serious industrial town during the 19th C, manufacturing such items as traction engines, ballbearings, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its import in light industrial engineering caused it to be a bombing target during World War 2, and it was struck many times.

The railway found its way to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence to the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done approximately forty five yrs before (1797), when it connected the town with the Blackwater estuary, allowing ships to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town moved into some decline during the nineteen-eighties, simply because a lot of its industrial facilities ceased to be profitable, although it still is a successful and booming town today, predominantly due to the nearness to London, plus the good rail and road links.

The town sits near the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it's some 16 mls drive from Colchester and about 51 kms from the centre of the capital. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
