Essex's county town, Chelmsford is found upon the rivers Chelmer and Can, a drive of some 32 mls from the centre of London. Chelmsford has a population of some 111,000 inhabitants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,300.

It is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church was changed into a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The location of early Bronze Age and Neolithic settlements, the town was subsequently the location of a Roman fortification in roughly AD 60, and the town which grew up surrounding the fortress was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . An Anglo Saxon community succeeded the demise of Roman control in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, nevertheless by1189 it had taken on its contemporary identity of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th century, it became the county town of Essex and furthermore became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent a number of the people of the town became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a few of the main culprits were thereafter hung in the town after the uprising was ended by Richard the Second.

The seventeenth century witnessed many more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and executed numerous assumed exponents of witchcraft.

For many generations a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford developed into a vital industrial town in the 19th Cent, manufacturing such goods as steam engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products, traction engines and ballbearings. Its import in light industrial manufacturing led to its being a bombing target during WW2, and it was hit on a few occasions.

The train found its way to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence for the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did about forty five years earlier (1797), when it joined Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, which made it possible for watercraft to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town got into a time of decline during the 1980's, as a lot of its plants ceased to be profitable, though it is still a successful and expanding town today, mostly because of its proximity to London, plus the good rail and road connections.

The town is situated beside the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it is about twenty six kilometers driving distance from Colchester and about 51 km from central London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
