Essex's county town, Chelmsford is set upon the Chelmer and Can rivers, roughly thirty two mls from the city of London. Chelmsford has a populace of some one hundred and eleven thousand residents, while the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,300.

It is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin got the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford History: The site of long gone Neolithic and Bronze Age settlements, Chelmsford was subsequently the location of a Roman fortification in roughly AD 60, and the village that expanded around the fortification was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . An Anglo Saxon settlement superseded the downfall of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, however one hundred years later it had taken on its modern name of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th Cent, it took on the title of county town of Essex and furthermore became seat of the local assize. During the 14th century some of the people of the town were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a number of the instigators were accordingly executed in the town after the insurrection was ended by Richard II.

The seventeenth century witnessed more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and hanged many suspected exponents of witchcraft.

Over the generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved in to a substantial industrial town during the 19th C, manufacturing such products as ball bearings, traction engines, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its prominence in light industrial engineering led to its being a bombing target in WWII, and it was struck many times.

The railway found its way to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence for the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some forty five years earlier (1797), when it joined the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, which made it possible for boats to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town went through a period of decline during the 1980's, because a high percentage of its industry closed down, even so it is still a successful and developing town today, largely due to the proximity to the city of london, plus its outstanding rail and road connections.

The town is found beside the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it is roughly sixteen mls car journey from Colchester and about 32 mls from the centre of the capital. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
