The county town of Essex, Chelmsford can be found on the Chelmer and Can rivers, some 32 miles from the centre of London. The town boasts a population of around 111,000 people, and the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,300.

It is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin became a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The History of Chelmsford: The location of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, the town was later the location of a Roman fort in roughly AD 60, and the settlement that grew up in the locality of the fortification was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon camp came after the demise of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was listed as Celmeresfort, even though 100 years later it had become known by its current identity of Chelmsford.

At the time of the thirteenth century, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and furthermore became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent many of the citizens of the town participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, some of the agitators were later put to death in the town after the rebellion was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th century saw more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and executed countless assumed witches.

Throughout the years a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford turned into an important manufacturing town in the nineteenth century, crafting such goods as steam engines, traction engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products and ballbearings. Its import in light industrial manufacturing led to its being a bombing target during WW2, and it was hit on a few occasions.

The railway came to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity to the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some 45 years earlier (1797), at which time it interconnected the town with the Blackwater estuary, making it possible for watercraft to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town went into considerable decline in the nineteen-eighties, since a good deal of its industry closed down, though it still is a thriving and blooming town today, mostly due to its close proximity to the capital, plus the good rail and road communications.

Chelmsford is set beside the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it is some sixteen mls from Colchester and about fifty-one kilometers from the centre of London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
