The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is set upon the Can and Chelmer rivers, some thirty two mls from the city of London. The town boasts a populace of roughly 110,000 people, and the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,300.

It is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin became a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The location of long past Neolithic and Bronze Age communities, the town was subsequently the location of a Roman fort in roughly 60 AD, and the community that grew up around the fort was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon community followed the decline of Roman control in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was recognized as Celmeresfort, whilst 100 years later being called by its present identity of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th C, it took on the title of county town of Essex plus became seat of the local assize. During the 14th century many of the citizens of the town took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), some of the instigators were consequently executed in Chelmsford after the uprising was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th C witnessed more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and hanged countless assumed exponents of witchcraft.

Throughout the centuries a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford turned into a significant manufacturing town in the nineteenth century, manufacturing items such as ball bearings, traction engines, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its importance in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a bombing target in the Second World War, and it was successfully hit a number of times.

The railway line arrived at the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity to the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did about forty five years before (1797), at which time it joined the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, which allowed boats to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

The town got into some decline in the nineteen-eighties, mainly because a lot of its industry went bust, though it continues to be a flourishing and booming town today, mainly due to its closeness to the city of london, and the terrific rail and road links.

Chelmsford sits adjacent to the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it is about twenty six kilometers drive from Colchester and about thirty-two mls from the centre of the capital.
