The county town of Essex, Chelmsford can be found upon the Chelmer and Can rivers, some thirty two mls from the centre of London. The town has got a population of roughly 111,000 occupants, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,000.

Chelmsford is an old town which was the location of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin was changed into a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The location of long gone Bronze Age and Neolithic colonies, the town was later the site of a Roman fort in about 60 AD, and the encampment which grew up surrounding the fortress was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . A Saxon camp succeeded the demise of Roman control in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was noted as Celmeresfort, whilst one hundred years later it had taken on its present identity of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th Cent, it took on the title of county town of Essex and moreover became seat of the local assize. During the 14th century some of the people of Chelmsford participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a handful of the leading culprits were ultimately hung in the town after the rebellion was ended by Richard the Second.

The seventeenth century witnessed more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and executed many suspected exponents of witchcraft.

For several years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved in to a major manufacturing town during the 19th Cent, crafting such products as ball bearings, agricultural machinery, traction engines, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its prominence in light industrial engineering caused it to be a bombing target in the Second World War, and it was struck on several occasions.

The railway came to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity for the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some 45 yrs earlier (1797), when it joined Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, allowing boats to access the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went into a time of decline in the nineteen-eighties, because a good deal of its industrial facilities ceased to be profitable, though it is still a flourishing and developing town today, mainly due to its close proximity to the city of london, and its superb rail and road connections.

Chelmsford lies adjacent to the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it is some twenty six km drive from Colchester and about fifty-one kms from central London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
