A Saxon encampment followed after the decline of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, even though one hundred years later it had taken on its present title of Chelmsford.

The train found its way to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity to the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some 45 years before (1797), when it linked Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, letting watercraft to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town moved into a time of decline in the nineteen-eighties, as a high percentage of its industry closed, even so it continues to be a flourishing and developing town today, primarily due to its closeness to the capital, and the excellent rail and road communications.
