Essex's county town, Chelmsford is located upon the rivers Can and Chelmer, roughly thirty two mls from central London. The town boasts a populace of roughly 110,000 occupants, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,300.

Chelmsford is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fortress in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was changed into a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historical Past of Chelmsford: The location of long gone Bronze Age and Neolithic encampments, the town was later on the site of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD, and the village that expanded in the locality of the fortress was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon community followed after the decline of the Romans in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was recognized as Celmeresfort, nevertheless by1189 it had become known by its present title of Chelmsford.

During the thirteenth century, it became the county town of Essex plus became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th century a number of the occupants of the town participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), several of the main instigators were subsequently put to death in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the rebellion.

The 17th C saw more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and put to death many supposed witches.

For many generations a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford became a serious manufacturing town in the 19th Cent, producing goods such as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its importance in light industrial manufacturing led to its being a bombing target in World War 2, and it was successfully struck several times.

The railway came to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence for the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did approximately forty five yrs earlier (1797), at which time it interconnected the town with the Blackwater estuary, allowing watercraft to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town went through a period of decline in the nineteen-eighties, since a high percentage of its industry closed, even so it continues to be a flourishing and growing town today, mostly due to its closeness to London, and the good rail and road connections.

The town is located just off the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it is approximately sixteen miles driving distance from Colchester and about 32 miles from the centre of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
