River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The site of long past Bronze Age and Neolithic settlements, Chelmsford was later on the location of a Roman fort in about AD 60, and the community which grew up around the fort was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon community superseded the downfall of Roman control in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, however by1189 it was being referred to by its present-day name of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th century, it became the county town of Essex plus became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent many of the locals of Chelmsford were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), some of the leading instigators were later put to death in the town after the insurrection was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th C saw lots more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and executed many presumed exponents of witchcraft.

For several centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed into a substantial industrial town in the 19th C, manufacturing such items as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its significance in light industrial manufacturing resulted in its being a target of bombing during WWII, and it was successfully hit on several occasions.

The railway arrived in the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence for the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some 45 years earlier (1797), at which time it interconnected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, helping craft to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

The town moved into a period of decline during the 1980's, as a lot of its industry went bust, though it remains a successful and blooming town today, primarily due to its proximity to London, plus the outstanding road and rail communications.

The town is located adjacent to the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it is approximately sixteen mls drive from Colchester and about fifty-one km from the centre of London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
