Essex's county town, Chelmsford lies upon the rivers Chelmer and Can, roughly thirty two mls from the centre of London. Chelmsford boasts a populace of about 111,000 inhabitants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,000.

It is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was named a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford History: The location of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age encampments, the town was later on the location of a Roman fort in approximately AD 60, and the encampment that expanded surrounding the fortress was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon community followed the end of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, even though by the year 1199 it had taken on its modern identity of Chelmsford.

At the time of the thirteenth century, it became the county town of Essex and moreover became seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent some of the inhabitants of the town took part in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a few of the leading culprits were later put to death in Chelmsford after the rebellion was ended by Richard II.

The 17th Cent saw more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and executed countless assumed exponents of witchcraft.

Over the years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became an important industrial town in the 19th Cent, manufacturing such items as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its importance in light industrial engineering caused it to be a target of bombing in WW2, and it was struck on several occasions.

The railway arrived in the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence for the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some approximately 45 yrs earlier (1797), when it connected the town with the Blackwater estuary, helping watercraft to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

The town entered a time of decline in the nineteen-eighties, since a good deal of its manufacturers ceased to be profitable, all the same it remains a successful and growing town today, mostly due to the nearness to the capital, plus its exceptional rail and road communications.

The town stands beside the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it's around 26 kilometres from Colchester and about 32 miles from the heart of London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
