Essex's county town, Chelmsford can be found upon the Can and Chelmer rivers, a car journey of approximately 32 mls from the city of London. Chelmsford has a populace of some one hundred and eleven thousand residents, while the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,300.

Chelmsford is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fort in around 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The site of very early Bronze Age and Neolithic settlements, Chelmsford was subsequently the location of a Roman fortification in roughly the first century AD, and the commune that grew up surrounding the fort was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. A Saxon community came after the end of the Romans in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was registered as Celmeresfort, however by the year 1199 it was being referred to by its present name of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th century, it became the county town of Essex and also became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent some of the citizens of the town were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a handful of the agitators were consequently executed in the town after the rebellion was ended by Richard II.

The 17th century saw yet more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and put to death many supposed witches.

For many centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed into a substantial industrial town during the 19th century, manufacturing such items as steam engines, traction engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products and ballbearings. Its importance in light industrial manufacturing resulted in its being a bombing target in World War 2, and it was struck on a few occasions.

The railway line found its way to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence to the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some forty five years before (1797), at which time it connected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, enabling watercraft to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went into a period of decline in the nineteen-eighties, mainly because much of its manufacturing facilities shut down, even so it still is a thriving and booming town today, primarily due to its nearness to the city of london, plus the superb rail and road communications.

The town can be found near the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it's around 26 kilometers drive from Colchester and about 51 kilometres from the centre of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
