A Saxon settlement came after the downfall of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was recognized as Celmeresfort, whilst by1189 it was being referred to by its modern name of Chelmsford.

During the thirteenth century, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and additionally became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent many of the citizens of the town were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a handful of the main culprits were subsequently executed in Chelmsford after Richard the Second ended the uprising.

The seventeenth century saw more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and hanged many assumed exponents of witchcraft.

Over the generations a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford evolved in to a vital industrial town in the 19th Cent, making items such as steam engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products, traction engines and ballbearings. Its significance in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a target for bombing during WW2, and it was hit a few times.

The train came to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence for the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some about forty five years earlier (1797), when it linked Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, helping vessels to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went through a time of decline during the 1980's, as a lot of its production facilities ceased to be profitable, even so it still is a flourishing and growing town today, for the most part due to its close proximity to the capital, plus the outstanding rail and road links.
