The county town of Essex, Chelmsford sits on the Can and Chelmer rivers, some 32 mls from the city of London. The town has a populace of about 111,000 occupants, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,000.

Chelmsford is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fort in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The location of long past Bronze Age and Neolithic communities, the town was later the location of a Roman fortification in approximately the 1st century AD, and the town that evolved in the area of the fortress was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon camp succeeded the downfall of Roman control in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was described as Celmeresfort, whilst by1189 it had become known by its current name of Chelmsford.

During the 13th century, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and furthermore became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th C many of the locals of Chelmsford participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a few of the main culprits were accordingly executed in Chelmsford after Richard the Second ended the revolt.

The 17th C witnessed yet more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and executed many presumed witches.

For many generations a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford evolved in to a major manufacturing town during the nineteenth century, manufacturing such goods as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its prominence in light industry resulted in its being a bombing target during WWII, and it was successfully struck on several occasions.

The railway arrived in Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence to the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did approximately 45 years before (1797), when it interconnected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, helping vessels to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town moved into significant decline during the 1980's, because a good deal of its industries shut down, although it remains a successful and booming town today, primarily due to its closeness to London, plus its exceptional rail and road communications.

Chelmsford sits beside the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it is approximately twenty six km driving distance from Colchester and about thirty-two mls from central London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
