The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is set on the Can and Chelmer rivers, a driving distance of about 32 miles from the heart of London. The town has got a populace of some 111,000 residents, while the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,300.

It is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fortress in about 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church was named a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).
