The county town of Essex, Chelmsford lies upon the Chelmer and Can rivers, some thirty two mls from central London. Chelmsford boasts a population of approximately 110,000 occupants, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,000.

Chelmsford is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin was changed into a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historic Past of Chelmsford: The location of early Bronze Age and Neolithic communities, Chelmsford was later the location of a Roman fortress in approximately the first century AD, and the encampment that evolved round the fortress was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon camp succeeded the downfall of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, whilst by1189 it had become known by its present-day identity of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th Cent, it took on the title of county town of Essex and furthermore became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th C some of the citizens of the town became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, some of the main culprits were consequently executed in the town after Richard II ended the insurrection.

The 17th C saw lots more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and hanged many suspected exponents of witchcraft.

Over the years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became a substantial manufacturing town during the 19th century, producing products such as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its import in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a bombing target during the Second World War, and it was successfully hit on a few occasions.

The train came to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity for the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did roughly forty five yrs earlier (1797), when it connected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, making it possible for craft to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went into some decline during the nineteen-eighties, when much of its industry ceased to be profitable, although it remains a successful and expanding town today, mainly due to the close proximity to the capital, and its first class road and rail communications.

Chelmsford is set just off the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it is about twenty six kilometres driving distance from Colchester and about thirty-two mls from the centre of London.
