The county town of Essex, Chelmsford lies on the rivers Chelmer and Can, approximately 32 mls from the city of London. The town has a populace of approximately 110,000 people, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,300.

It is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin became a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The site of very early Bronze Age and Neolithic colonies, the town was later the location of a Roman fortress in about the first century AD, and the community that grew up in the locality of the fortification was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon community came after the demise of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, whilst one hundred years later it had become known by its contemporary identity of Chelmsford.

As early as the thirteenth century, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and also became seat of the local assize. During the 14th C some of the occupants of Chelmsford participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, some of the main culprits were consequently put to death in Chelmsford after the rebellion was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th century witnessed lots more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and executed countless presumed witches.

Across the generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became an important manufacturing town in the 19th Cent, manufacturing such items as ball bearings, agricultural machinery, traction engines, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its importance in light industrial engineering caused it to be a target for bombing during World War 2, and it was struck on a number of occasions.

The train came to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence to the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some 45 years before (1797), at which time it joined Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, making it possible for craft to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

The town moved into a time of decline in the 1980's, simply because much of its industry went bust, however it remains a successful and growing town today, mainly due to its closeness to the city of london, and its first rate road and rail communications.

Chelmsford can be found beside the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it is around 26 kilometres from Colchester and about fifty-one kms from the heart of London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
