Essex's county town, Chelmsford is set on the Chelmer and Can rivers, some 32 mls from the centre of London. The town has a population of approximately 111,000 occupants, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,300.

It is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fortress in approximately 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin got the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford History: The site of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, the town was subsequently the location of a Roman fort in approximately 60 AD, and the settlement that grew up round the fortification was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon camp followed after the downfall of the Romans in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was recorded as Celmeresfort, though by1189 it was being referred to by its contemporary name of Chelmsford.

In the 13th Cent, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and also became the seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century many of the people of the town participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a number of the agitators were ultimately put to death in Chelmsford after the revolt was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th C saw many more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and executed many suspected witches.

Over the centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford turned in to an important manufacturing town in the 19th C, producing goods such as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its significance in light industry resulted in its being a target of bombing during WWII, and it was hit on several occasions.

The railway line came to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity for the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did about 45 yrs before (1797), when it connected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, making it possible for watercraft to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went through some decline during the 1980's, since a lot of its manufacturers went bust, yet it continues to be a successful and booming town today, primarily due to its nearness to the city of london, and the first rate road and rail communications.

Chelmsford lies just off the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it's some twenty six km drive from Colchester and about thirty-two miles from the centre of London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
