Essex's county town, Chelmsford is set upon the Can and Chelmer rivers, some 32 miles from the heart of London. The town boasts a population of some 111,000 residents, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,000.

Chelmsford is an old town which was the location of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church was changed into a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The History of Chelmsford: The site of long past Neolithic and Bronze Age communities, the town was subsequently the location of a Roman fortification in approximately the first century AD, and the community that grew up round the fort was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon settlement superseded the end of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was listed as Celmeresfort, however by the year 1199 it was being referred to by its contemporary name of Chelmsford.

In the 13th Cent, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and additionally became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th century some of the residents of the town were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), some of the main agitators were thereafter put to death in Chelmsford after Richard the Second ended the rebellion.

The 17th Cent witnessed many more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and executed countless alleged exponents of witchcraft.

For many generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed into an important industrial town during the 19th C, manufacturing such items as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its prominence in light industrial engineering led to its being a bombing target during World War 2, and it was successfully struck on several occasions.

The train found its way to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence for the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some 45 years before (1797), when it connected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, which enabled vessels to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went through a time of decline during the 1980's, since a lot of its industry closed, even so it remains a successful and blooming town today, for the most part due to the proximity to the city of london, and its terrific rail and road communications.

The town is located near the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it's about 16 mls driving distance from Colchester and about fifty-one kms from the centre of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
