The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is set on the Can and Chelmer rivers, some thirty two miles from central London. The town boasts a populace of about 110,000 inhabitants, while the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,300.

It is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fort in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin was changed into a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The site of early Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, Chelmsford was later the site of a Roman fort in approximately 60 AD, and the commune which expanded round the fortress was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon camp superseded the downfall of Roman control in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, nevertheless 100 years later it was being referred to by its present-day identity of Chelmsford.

During the 13th C, it took on the title of county town of Essex and also became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th century a number of the people of the town participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a number of the agitators were ultimately executed in the town after the insurrection was ended by Richard II.

The 17th C saw lots more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and hanged countless assumed witches.

Over the years a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford evolved into a major manufacturing town in the nineteenth century, crafting products such as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its prominence in light industrial engineering caused it to be a target for bombing during WW2, and it was hit on several occasions.

The train came to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity to the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some forty five yrs before (1797), when it interconnected the town with the Blackwater estuary, allowing boats to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford got into some decline in the nineteen-eighties, simply because a high percentage of its industries closed down, though it continues to be a thriving and blooming town today, predominantly because of its proximity to London, and the good rail and road links.

The town is found near the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it is about twenty six km drive from Colchester and about thirty-two mls from central London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
