The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is found on the Chelmer and Can rivers, around thirty two miles from the city of London. The town has got a populace of about 111,000 residents, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

It is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fort in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin got the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

An Anglo Saxon community followed the downfall of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was documented as Celmeresfort, however one hundred years later being called by its modern identity of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th Cent, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex plus became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th century a number of the people of Chelmsford participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a few of the main instigators were consequently hung in Chelmsford after the revolt was ended by Richard II.

The 17th Cent saw many more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and put to death numerous presumed exponents of witchcraft.

For several years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved in to a substantial industrial town during the 19th Cent, manufacturing products such as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its prominence in light industry caused it to be a target of bombing during WW2, and it was successfully struck on a number of occasions.

The train arrived in the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity for the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did roughly forty five years earlier (1797), when it joined the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, allowing watercraft to reach the centre of town from the open sea.
