Essex's county town, Chelmsford is set on the rivers Can and Chelmer, around thirty two mls from the city of London. Chelmsford has a populace of some 111,500 inhabitants, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,000.

Chelmsford is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church got the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

The seventeenth century witnessed many more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and hanged numerous presumed witches.

For many centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved into a substantial industrial town during the nineteenth century, manufacturing such items as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its prominence in light industrial engineering resulted in its being a bombing target in the Second World War, and it was hit on a few occasions.

The railway line found its way to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity to the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some forty five years earlier (1797), when it interconnected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, which made it possible for ships to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went into a time of decline during the 1980's, because much of its manufacturers ceased to be profitable, nonetheless it is still a successful and expanding town today, largely due to the closeness to the capital, and the good road and rail communications.
