The county town of Essex, Chelmsford can be found upon the Chelmer and Can rivers, around 32 mls from the heart of London. The town has a population of approximately 110,000 inhabitants, while the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,000.

Chelmsford is an early town which was the location of a Roman fort in about 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historic Past of Chelmsford: The location of long past Bronze Age and Neolithic encampments, Chelmsford was later the location of a Roman fortress in approximately the 1st century AD, and the settlement which developed surrounding the fortification was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . An Anglo Saxon encampment superseded the end of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, however 100 years later it was being referred to by its current identity of Chelmsford.

During the 13th Cent, it took on the title of county town of Essex and moreover became seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent a number of the locals of the town became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a few of the instigators were accordingly put to death in Chelmsford after Richard the Second ended the rebellion.

The 17th C saw lots more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and executed numerous alleged witches.

For many centuries a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford evolved into a substantial industrial town during the 19th Cent, producing products such as ball bearings, traction engines, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its importance in light industrial engineering resulted in its being a target for bombing during WW2, and it was struck many times.

The railway line arrived in the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence for the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some forty five years earlier (1797), when it interconnected the town with the Blackwater estuary, enabling ships to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went into significant decline in the 1980's, mainly because a high percentage of its manufacturing facilities went bust, in spite of this it still is a thriving and booming town today, predominantly due to its nearness to the city of london, and its good road and rail communications.

The town is found just off the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it's approximately 16 miles drive from Colchester and about fifty-one kilometers from central London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
