Essex's county town, Chelmsford lies on the rivers Can and Chelmer, some thirty two mls from the heart of London. The town has a population of some 111,500 people, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,300.

It is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin was named a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).
