Essex's county town, Chelmsford can be found upon the Chelmer and Can rivers, some thirty two miles from central London. Chelmsford has got a population of about one hundred and eleven thousand inhabitants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

Chelmsford is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was named a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The site of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, Chelmsford was later the location of a Roman fort in about 60 AD, and the settlement that expanded round the fort was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon camp followed the downfall of the Romans in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was noted as Celmeresfort, even though by1189 it was being referred to by its present-day identity of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th century, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex plus became seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent many of the occupants of Chelmsford took part in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a few of the agitators were accordingly executed in the town after the revolt was ended by Richard II.

The 17th century saw yet more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and hanged numerous suspected witches.

Across the generations a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford turned into an important industrial town during the 19th C, manufacturing items such as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its importance in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a bombing target in World War 2, and it was successfully struck on a number of occasions.

The railway line arrived at the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence for the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some forty five yrs earlier (1797), when it interconnected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, making it possible for ships to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town got into a period of decline in the nineteen-eighties, since much of its industry closed down, nonetheless it continues to be a thriving and growing town today, predominantly due to its closeness to the city of london, plus the terrific rail and road communications.

Chelmsford is positioned adjacent to the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it's approximately 16 mls from Colchester and about thirty-two mls from central London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
