The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is located on the rivers Can and Chelmer, about 32 mls from central London. The town has got a population of about one hundred and eleven thousand occupants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,300.

Chelmsford is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin was named a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - - 411097The Historical Past of Chelmsford: The site of very early Bronze Age and Neolithic communities, the town was later on the location of a Roman fort in about 60 AD, and the settlement which grew up surrounding the fortification was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . An Anglo Saxon settlement followed the demise of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, even though by1189 being called by its modern identity of Chelmsford.

During the 13th century, it became the county town of Essex and moreover became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th century some of the locals of Chelmsford took part in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a handful of the main instigators were ultimately executed in the town after the rebellion was ended by Richard II.

The 17th Cent witnessed lots more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and executed numerous suspected exponents of witchcraft.

For several years a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford became a substantial industrial town during the 19th C, producing such products as steam engines, traction engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products and ballbearings. Its importance in light industrial engineering caused it to be a target of bombing in the Second World War, and it was struck quite a few times.

The railway came to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity to the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done approximately 45 yrs earlier (1797), when it joined Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, which made it possible for boats to access the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went through significant decline in the 1980's, when a good deal of its factories closed, however it remains a thriving and expanding town today, for the most part because of its closeness to London, plus the terrific rail and road communications.
