Chelmsford is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin was named a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The location of long gone Bronze Age and Neolithic encampments, the town was later on the site of a Roman fortification in approximately AD 60, and the village which developed surrounding the fort was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon encampment superseded the downfall of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, whilst 100 years later being called by its modern title of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th Cent, it took on the title of county town of Essex and in addition became seat of the local assize. During the 14th century many of the people of Chelmsford took part in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a few of the ringleaders were subsequently executed in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the insurrection.

The 17th Cent witnessed many more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and hanged countless alleged witches.

For several generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford turned in to a substantial industrial town in the 19th century, crafting such products as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its significance in light industry led to its being a target of bombing during the Second World War, and it was struck several times.

The railway arrived at the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity to the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some approximately 45 years before (1797), when it interconnected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, encouraging craft to access the centre of town from the open sea.

The town moved into a time of decline in the 1980's, since a high percentage of its manufacturing facilities shut down, yet it still is a thriving and expanding town today, principally due to its nearness to the capital, plus its good rail and road links.

The town is located adjacent to the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it's roughly 26 km driving distance from Colchester and about 51 km from central London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
