River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historical Past of Chelmsford: The location of long past Neolithic and Bronze Age encampments, Chelmsford was later the site of a Roman fortification in roughly AD 60, and the commune which grew up round the fortification was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon camp came after the downfall of the Romans in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was registered as Celmeresfort, nevertheless 100 years later it had become known by its present-day name of Chelmsford.

During the 13th century, it took on the title of county town of Essex and moreover became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th C a number of the citizens of the town were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, some of the leading instigators were ultimately executed in Chelmsford after the insurrection was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th century saw many more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and executed numerous suspected exponents of witchcraft.

For several generations a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford became an important manufacturing town in the 19th Cent, producing such goods as ball bearings, agricultural machinery, traction engines, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its importance in light industrial engineering led to its being a target of bombing in WW2, and it was successfully hit on a number of occasions.

The railway arrived in Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence to the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did approximately forty five yrs before (1797), when it interconnected the town with the Blackwater estuary, allowing boats to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford moved into a period of decline during the nineteen-eighties, simply because a good deal of its plants shut down, though it remains a thriving and expanding town today, primarily due to the nearness to the capital, and the terrific rail and road communications.

The town is situated adjacent to the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it's approximately 26 km from Colchester and about 32 miles from the centre of the capital. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
